Infineon reorganizes into three segments, prioritizing booming AI power chip business over flagging automotive unit. Stock retreats 4% after 70% YTD surge. Raised guidance: revenue over €16B.

The German chipmaker is drawing a clear line under its past. Infineon will collapse its four-division structure into three segments from the fourth quarter of its 2026 fiscal year, a move that reflects the growing chasm between a flagging automotive business and a booming artificial-intelligence market. From that point, operations will rest on Automotive, Power Systems and Edge Systems — a leaner framework designed to put firepower behind the biggest growth engine.

That engine is already firing. Power Systems saw revenue climb more than a quarter in the latest period, delivering margins above 20 percent as hyperscale data centres devour ever more energy for AI workloads. The division is expected to contribute roughly 30 percent of group sales going forward, while the auto unit, once the star performer, will account for about half. Automotive margins slipped to 18.1 percent in the quarter, squeezed by price pressure and tepid demand for high-voltage chips used in electric vehicles.

Investors, however, chose to cash in chips rather than cheer the news. The stock closed at €64.96 on Friday, down 3.98 percent, after touching a fresh high of €67.65 the previous day. The trigger was a sector-wide sell-off following strong results from US equipment maker Applied Materials, but the real fuel for the retreat lay closer to home. The relative strength index had touched nearly 71 — a clear signal the shares were overheated after a 69.59 percent year-to-date surge. Over the past 30 days alone, the stock had gained 46.04 percent.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

Broader geopolitical jitters added to the pressure. The latest summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping failed to produce any tangible easing in semiconductor export restrictions. For a company that books more than 40 percent of its automotive revenue in China, according to UBS data, the lack of a formal green light for high-end chip exports to the country keeps a heavy cloud over the outlook. Rising oil prices and fresh anxiety over the Iran conflict further weighed on cyclical names, making high-flying stocks particularly vulnerable.

Infineon’s management is navigating a strategic landscape that extends well beyond the daily chart. The company no longer has its own US production after selling a plant in Austin, and a new threat is brewing in Japan: Rohm, Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric are examining a merger of their power semiconductor operations, a move that could challenge Infineon’s position in the crucial silicon carbide market. To provide stability, the supervisory board plans to extend the contracts of CEO Jochen Hanebeck and CFO Sven Schneider at the annual meeting in May.

The raised guidance offers a counterweight. Infineon now expects full-year revenue of more than €16 billion and free cash flow of nearly €1.7 billion. The next concrete test comes on August 5, when the company reports third-quarter results, with management pencilling in around €4.1 billion in sales. For now, the stock sits well above its key moving averages and has more than doubled from the low of €31.38, leaving the long-term trend intact even as short-term profit-taking reminds everyone that no rally moves in a straight line.
