Constant loud noise and complex care demands make headaches one of the most common stress symptoms among German daycare workers. To address this, the municipal operator KiTa Bremen has started a two-year health project aimed at equipping employees with practical strategies to prevent headaches before they start.

The programme, called “Gesundheit beginnt im Kopf: Mit Wissen gegen den Kopfschmerz” (“Health Begins in the Mind: Knowledge Against Headaches”), is financially supported by the health insurance fund BKK firmus. Implementation is handled by the non-profit social enterprise ZIES gGmbH. Under the plan, each participating daycare facility can send two or three staff members to be trained as multipliers, who can then pass on headache-prevention techniques to their colleagues.

Workplace health and safety is a growing priority across sectors, and UK employers face similar challenges when it comes to meeting their legal obligations. A free Health & Safety Toolkit provides ready-to-use risk assessments, checklists and toolbox talks that help businesses stay compliant with UK regulations while protecting their teams. Over 37,000 British companies already use these resources. Download the free Health & Safety Toolkit

The training consists of full-day sessions running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with most dates held online. The first central full-day session is scheduled for 8 October 2026. Further online dates follow on 4 February 2027, 25 February 2027, and 25 March 2027. A single in-person session planned for 18 March 2027 has already been cancelled. Registration for the first training closes on 18 September 2026, and inquiries can be directed to Tina Köhn.

The initiative arrives as workplace health in education settings draws increasing attention. Germany’s Professional Association for Nursing Professions (DBfP) today called for a nationwide legal framework for school health nurses. An expert report recently described the health situation of children, adolescents, and their educational environment as alarming, citing rising psychological strain.

Political developments in Bremen are also moving. The city’s Senate today approved an adjustment to its funding guidelines for daycare providers. An additional two million euros will be allocated over the next two years, intended to safeguard collectively agreed wages and maintain the diversity of provider structures. Retroactive increases to various per-group allowances for childcare groups take effect on 1 May and 1 August 2026.

Other regions are stepping up health programmes too. In Burgenland, an interactive exhibition on mental health opened yesterday. Together, these efforts underline a growing demand for specialised prevention programmes tailored to the education sector—where the daily mix of noise, responsibility, and limited quiet time makes headaches a persistent occupational hazard.
