Hochtief Stock Recovers After DAX Entry Volatility, Fueled by Record Orders and SMR Bet

The turbulence that greeted Hochtief’s arrival in Germany’s blue-chip index is beginning to subside. After a classic “sell the news” sell-off that saw the stock plunge more than 6% on its first day of DAX membership and slip further to €504.50 the following session, the shares have found their footing. By Thursday, the Essen-based builder was trading at €512.50, a gain of 1.18%, as the profit-taking that followed index inclusion gradually ebbed.

The violent swings were almost predictable given the stock’s unusual ownership structure. Spanish parent ACS controls roughly 76% of Hochtief, leaving barely a fifth of the shares in free float. When ETF providers and index funds completed their mandatory rebalancing at the start of the week, the limited supply amplified the downward pressure — and now the same scarcity is helping to cushion the recovery. The stock’s 30-day realised volatility has recently been running at 66%, a stark illustration of how thin liquidity can magnify moves in both directions.

A Record Order Book Backed by Solid First-Quarter Numbers

Beneath the index mechanics, the operational story remains compelling. Hochtief posted first-quarter revenue of €9.4 billion, up 5% year on year, while operating profit surged nearly 30% to €217 million. Adjusted EBITDA rose 18% to €581 million, and adjusted EBIT climbed 28% to €428 million. The order book swelled to a record €79.3 billion by the end of March, compared with €70.2 billion a year earlier, with 60% of new orders flowing from growth sectors such as artificial-intelligence data centres and defence infrastructure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Hochtief?

Betting on Small Nuclear Reactors

One of the most intriguing growth bets is on small modular reactors (SMRs). Hochtief is supporting Amentum, the US-based engineering giant, in a global programme to deploy Rolls-Royce SMR technology, and will manage the construction of SMR projects in Britain and the European Union directly. The company’s nuclear expertise stretches back to the 1950s, and the EU Commission’s recent strategy to bring the first European SMRs online by the early 2030s has added a tailwind. Together with booming demand for AI data centres, rising defence budgets, and multi-billion-euro infrastructure programmes, these initiatives give Hochtief a diversified pipeline.

Analyst Caution Tempers Enthusiasm

Despite the strong fundamentals, the Street remains cautious on valuation. Bernstein Research rates the shares “market-perform” with a €532.60 target, noting that softening purchasing managers’ indices could weigh on the sector in the near term. Jefferies and Barclays have also issued hold ratings. The average analyst price target sits around €464, well below the current level, with estimates spanning a wide range from €259 to €605. The consensus recommendation is hold, reflecting concern that much of the good news is already priced in.

Year to date, Hochtief shares have gained 51% and trade well above their 200-day moving average of €373.31. Over the past twelve months, the stock has roughly tripled. Management is guiding for an operating group profit of between €950 million and €1 billion for the full year 2026. The next major test arrives on July 27, when the second-quarter report is due. Investors will be watching closely to see whether the record order backlog can begin to translate into the margins that the current share price seems to anticipate.
