With the summer field campaign just weeks away, Highland Critical Minerals has trimmed its portfolio to focus on two core assets while simultaneously fielding questions from Canadian regulators about a sudden spike in trading activity. The junior explorer heads into a critical operational period carrying both the promise of fresh geological data and the weight of unexplained market volatility.

The company’s Church lithium property in the Quetico district of Ontario and the Sy gold project in Nunavut are set to anchor the season’s work. Field activities at Church are scheduled to begin in late May, with a radiometric survey, LiDAR mapping, and a sampling program on the 5,526-hectare property covering 261 claims. Earlier Mobile Metal Ion soil sampling failed to produce clear lithium anomalies, so the new campaign is designed to sharpen the geological picture before any drilling decisions. In Nunavut, the Sy property spans 3,345 hectares within the Yathkyed Lake Greenstone Belt, a geological setting the company compares to known gold camps. Highland finalized contracts with local staff and service providers during April, after adding more claims in the region late last year.

Financing for the fieldwork is in place. In April, the company closed a non-brokered flow-through private placement, issuing 1.6 million shares at C$0.25 apiece to raise gross proceeds of C$400,000. The proceeds are earmarked for qualifying Canadian exploration expenditure, passing the tax benefits to investors.

That cash injection comes at a time when the stock is lurching from one extreme to another. Highland’s shares closed at C$0.61 on Friday after swinging between C$0.49 and C$0.74 during the session. The volatility is not new: over the past three months, the stock has moved an average of 29% per week. The longer-term chart is even more dramatic. From a peak of C$5.82 in November, the shares collapsed to C$0.19 by late March — a decline of more than 96% — before the recent rebound.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Highland Critical Minerals?

The sharp uptick in trading caught the attention of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO). On May 8, Highland issued a statement saying management was not aware of any material operational change that would explain the surge. It was the second time in six months the regulator had asked for such an explanation; a similar request was made in November 2025. CIRO routinely queries companies when share prices move sharply without a corresponding news announcement, a standard measure to guard against rumor-driven trading or market distortion.

The company’s portfolio restructuring earlier this year may have added to the story, though management has not linked it to the stock moves. Through a plan of arrangement, Highland reduced its stake in Highland Red Lake Gold from roughly 75% to under 20%. Shareholders received new shares and warrants in the spun-off entity. The move was intended to let Highland focus entirely on its two core projects.

Based on roughly 27.32 million shares outstanding, the current market capitalization sits at about C$16.66 million. The stock lacks analyst coverage and price targets, leaving investors to weigh the technical floor near C$0.25 — a level that held before the latest surge — against the potential for news from the field.

Highland Critical Minerals at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For now, the company’s near-term trajectory depends on two unknowns: whether the market can digest the unexplained price action, and when Highland will deliver the first meaningful data from its summer field season. Until then, it remains a speculative micro-cap story with a narrow window for news-driven catalysts.
