Highland Critical Minerals Faces Make-or-Break Season After 97% Value Erosion

The numbers are brutal. From a peak of C$5.82 in November 2025 to C$0.20 today, Highland Critical Minerals has shed roughly 97% of its market value in the span of six months. Yet the Canadian junior explorer is pressing ahead with a field season that could determine whether the stock has any floor left.
A Tale of Two Properties
The company's portfolio spans three Canadian holdings, but the near-term focus falls squarely on two. The Church Property in northwestern Ontario — roughly 89 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay — is slated for a spring field programme that should kick off in the coming weeks. This lithium target sits in the Quetico District of the Canadian Shield, a region known for lithium-bearing pegmatites. Early exploration samples returned lithium oxide concentrations of up to 1.18%, and the neighbouring Georgia Lake project hosts a resource of 10.6 million tonnes grading 0.88% Li?O — a benchmark the Church Property will be measured against.
Up in Nunavut, the Sy Property remains the crown jewel, covering roughly 46,000 hectares in the Yathkyed Lake Greenstone Belt. Geologically, it draws comparisons to the Meadowbank and Meliadine gold camps, two of the territory's most significant deposits. Historical surface samples have run as high as 38.8 grams of gold per tonne, and the company has documented more than 40 high-grade gold occurrences across a 30-kilometre strike length. Drill results from the 1980s returned up to 3.53 grams per tonne over 6.2 metres.
The catch: the most recent technical report on the Sy Property dates back to 2006 — nearly two decades old. Director Brian Morales has signalled plans to run a drone-based magnetic survey to reassess the historical data with modern geophysics and identify fresh drill targets. With gold prices elevated, the timing could prove opportune.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Highland Critical Minerals?
Funding Secured, But Questions Remain
The company closed a non-brokered flow-through private placement in April 2026, raising gross proceeds of C$400,000 through the issuance of 1.6 million shares at C$0.25 each. The funds are earmarked for Canadian exploration expenditures that qualify as critical-mineral mining expenses, with spending planned through the end of 2027. Investors will receive the tax benefits retroactively to December 31, 2026.
That C$400,000 gives Highland a runway, but the market capitalisation sits at just C$5.46 million — a figure that underscores how far the stock has fallen. The shares trade roughly 82% below their 200-day moving average and have underperformed the TSX Composite Index by nearly 93 percentage points over the past six months. No analyst price targets exist.
A Portfolio in Transition
The company has streamlined its structure by spinning off its Red Lake gold assets into a separate entity, Highland Red Lake Gold Corp. The move sharpens the focus on critical minerals — a strategic shift that aligns with the corporate name but has yet to generate any premium in the market.
The Church Property, which covers roughly 5,500 hectares, had a previous soil sampling programme that failed to identify significant lithium anomalies. The upcoming spring campaign is positioned as a follow-up, and the company will need to demonstrate progress. The Sy Property, meanwhile, awaits the geophysical survey that could breathe new life into its dated dataset.
What Comes Next
With Canadian markets closed for the May 1 holiday, attention shifts to the trading week that follows. The first concrete milestone will be news from the Church Property field programme — work that has been anticipated for months. If Highland can deliver encouraging results from Ontario and follow up quickly with an update on the Nunavut geophysics campaign, it could begin to rebuild the information flow that junior explorers desperately need in this market environment.
For now, the stock sits near its all-time low of C$0.19, hit in late March 2026. The next few weeks will tell whether the spring exploration season can arrest the slide.
