Highland Critical Minerals: A Restructured Explorer Holds Its Breath for Spring

The juniors mining space is littered with companies that raised cash, restructured, and then faded into obscurity. Highland Critical Minerals is determined not to be one of them — but the market is watching closely to see if the next move delivers.

The Canadian explorer has been through the wringer. Its stock now trades at C$0.20, representing a market cap of roughly C$5.5 million and a staggering decline of more than 96% from the November 2025 all-time high of C$5.82. That kind of drawdown tends to force hard decisions, and Highland has made them.

A streamlined portfolio, a smaller stake

The most consequential move came via a Plan of Arrangement that slashed Highland’s ownership in its former subsidiary, Highland Red Lake Gold, from approximately 73% down to just 17%. Shareholders received 0.5 shares and 0.5 warrants in the spun-off entity for each Highland share they held.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Highland Critical Minerals?

The logic was straightforward: concentrate capital and management attention on just two core assets. The company’s entire portfolio now consists of a lithium project in northern Ontario and a gold project in the territory of Nunavut.

Two projects, very different stories

The Church Property in Ontario has been a source of mixed signals. A Mobile Metal Ion soil sampling program failed to turn up significant lithium anomalies, which was a disappointment. Grab samples from earlier work did show lithium oxide concentrations as high as 1.18%, leaving the door open for a follow-up program in spring 2026. No formal decision on that has been announced yet.

The Sy Property in Nunavut offers a more compelling narrative. The 45,984-hectare land package sits within the Yathkyed Lake greenstone belt — geologically analogous to the Meadowbank and Meliadine gold deposits. Historical surface samples returned gold grades of up to 38.8 grams per tonne, and more than 40 high-grade gold occurrences have been documented across roughly 30 kilometres of strike length. The catch: that data is about 18 years old.

Airborne surveys from 2006 identified 690 electromagnetic conductors in the Yathkyed belt, and field work in 2007 and 2008 confirmed several of them, leading to the discovery of new sulphide pathways. Whether modern exploration techniques can extract more value from that dataset is the question the current season is meant to answer.

Cash in hand, but runway is tight

Highland closed a non-brokered flow-through private placement in April 2026, issuing 1.6 million shares at C$0.25 each for gross proceeds of C$400,000. The funds are earmarked for qualified Canadian exploration expenditures, with the tax benefits for investors taking effect by December 31, 2026. The spending window runs through the end of 2027.

Highland Critical Minerals at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

That provides enough of a runway to get field work started, but it doesn’t solve the bigger problem. The gold price hit a record high of nearly US$5,600 an ounce in early 2026, which has lifted valuations across the mining sector. Yet capital is flowing unevenly — investors are gravitating toward advanced-stage projects, leaving early-stage explorers like Highland fighting for attention.

The next catalyst

The company is currently finalising contracts with local personnel and contractors for the Nunavut programme. Management is also weighing next steps for the Ontario lithium project. A formal announcement on spring field work is expected once those agreements are in place — likely when Canadian markets reopen after the weekend.

For a stock that has lost 96% of its value in a matter of months, a confirmed field programme would be the first tangible catalyst since the restructuring was completed. The market is waiting to see whether Highland can turn its slimmed-down portfolio into something more than just a holding pattern.
