Hesse’s Scaffold Sweep: Only 21% of Construction Sites Passed as Falls Dominate Accident Stats

Inspectors in the German state of Hesse will intensify checks on scaffolding and fall-protection gear from June 8 to 12, 2026. The three regional councils — Gießen, Darmstadt and Kassel — are coordinating the blitz as part of a nationwide action week run by the Joint German Occupational Safety and Health Strategy (GDA). Their goal: to cut the number of serious and fatal fall accidents.
The urgency is driven by grim figures. Between 2009 and 2023, roughly 31% of all severe workplace accidents in Germany resulted from falls. In earlier inspections, only 21% of construction sites met the required safety standards.
Keeping a compliant record of workplace hazards is essential—especially when falls are involved. A free Risk Assessment Toolkit gives you 41 ready-to-use templates and checklists to document risks thoroughly and stay on top of your duties. Download the free Risk Assessment Toolkit
Broader data from the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) paints a wider picture. According to the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) statistics, about 75% of all workplace accidents trace back to mechanical hazards. Of those, a quarter each are caused by controlled moving parts, uncontrolled moving parts, and dangerous surfaces. Transport and traffic incidents account for roughly 20% of total accidents, while falls make up around 6% across all sectors.
To address the risks from heavy loads, several companies and associations ran training sessions in early June. On June 5 and 6, hands-on courses were held — including a truck-crane workshop by manufacturer Palfinger and training for aerial work platforms in Friedberg. A day earlier, on June 4, Klaus E. Grobecker GmbH organized its half-yearly briefing on dangerous-goods regulations for import and export staff, a key part of transport safety.
Real-world accidents underscore why such training matters. On June 5, three semi-trailers collided in a construction zone on the A2 motorway near Lehrte, injuring two drivers. Elsewhere on the same route, near Nordgermersleben, a truck driver was trapped and seriously injured in a rear-end collision at the tail of a traffic jam.
Further north, the canton police of St. Gallen took a preventive approach. At the Camper Day on June 6, drivers could have their motorhomes weighed on official police scales, with experts warning about the dangers of overloading.

Industry is also moving. Manufacturers have recently launched new three-sided tipper models with a gross vehicle weight of up to 14 tonnes. In large-scale plant construction, Essen-based Teichmann delivered a 450-tonne portal crane to Poland, where it will be used to build a railway tunnel. Teichmann expanded its capacity in March 2026 by taking over Kranservice Rhein-Ruhr GmbH.
Long-term competence is being built in education, too. At the Adolf-Kolping-Schule in Lohne, a new certified electrical engineering technician program will begin on September 26, 2026. Qualified professionals in electronics and mechatronics can apply until August 17, 2026.
