Heidelberger Druckmaschinen shares are navigating a critical juncture, caught between a strained core business and the costly launch of a new defense venture. Trading around €1.64, the stock recently slipped below its 100-day moving average, setting the stage for a decisive summer packed with key events that will shape its medium-term trajectory.

The immediate focus is on June 10, when the company will release its audited annual report for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Preliminary figures already revealed a central tension: while the currency-adjusted revenue target of approximately €2.35 billion was met, profitability fell short. The adjusted EBITDA margin came in at 6.6%, missing internal targets and dipping below the previous year's 7.1%.

Analysts point to a confluence of pressures behind this margin erosion. The outbreak of the Iran conflict in late February 2026 triggered an abrupt drop in customer investment. An unfavorable product mix in the fourth quarter and persistent negative currency effects added to the strain. Perhaps most significantly, the company is shouldering upfront costs for its strategic pivot into defense. Stefan Augustin, an analyst at Warburg Research, interprets the combination of stable sales and declining profitability as a sign of a "increasingly negative pricing environment." He maintains a €1.70 price target and a "Hold" rating on the stock, which closed Friday at €1.57.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberger Druckmaschinen?

This new defense endeavor, the joint venture ONBERG Autonomous Systems, officially commenced operations in Brandenburg an der Havel on April 14. In partnership with Ondas Autonomous Systems, the venture aims to manufacture automated drone defense systems at an industrial scale. CEO Jürgen Otto has championed the project as a fusion of Israeli technology and German engineering, creating "technological sovereignty." For now, however, the venture is a drag on margins, and its potential to become a genuine second pillar for the business remains unproven.

Before the annual report, the company has a chance to generate operational momentum at the interpack trade fair in Düsseldorf this May. Heidelberg will showcase its new "Boardmaster" flexo printing system for the fast-growing sustainable cardboard packaging market, capable of speeds up to 600 meters per minute. The segment has shown promise, with the company recently securing contracts worth over €30 million at a fair in São Paulo.

Yet, shareholders are not yet reaping rewards from these developments. The market anticipates a dividend cut to zero at the Annual General Meeting scheduled for July 23. The coming months present a formidable challenge for management. They must convincingly bridge the gap between a core printing business under pressure and the expensive investments in defense. Failure to do so could quickly bring the stock's 52-week low of €0.86 back into view.
