Heidelberger Druckmaschinen's Drone Defense Venture Takes Flight Amid Core Business Headwinds

The share price of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen surged dramatically on April 14, propelled by the official operational launch of its drone defense joint venture, ONBERG. The stock climbed 18 percent to reach €1.62 during morning trading, ultimately closing at €1.99 and decisively breaking above its 200-day moving average. This rally marks a more than doubling from its 52-week low of €0.86, a technical move many investors interpret as a potential trend reversal.
ONBERG Autonomous Systems, a partnership between Heidelberg subsidiary HD Advanced Technologies and the US-Israeli specialist Ondas Autonomous Systems, formally commenced operations at a ceremony in Brandenburg an der Havel. The event was attended by Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke and Israel's Ambassador Ron Prosor, underscoring the venture's strategic significance. The joint venture merges Ondas's drone detection and interception technology with HD Advanced Technologies's unmanned ground vehicle, creating an integrated defense system for operators of critical infrastructure.
The company is targeting initial markets in Germany and Ukraine, where authorities have reported a significant rise in drone sightings over critical sites since the start of the war. Approximately 380 employees are ready at the Brandenburg location, which is being developed into a dedicated competence center. Heidelberg holds a 49 percent stake in the project.
While the launch has ignited investor optimism, the path to profitability is measured. Management does not anticipate meaningful revenue from ONBERG before the second half of 2026. Operational break-even is projected to follow roughly twelve months after full production ramp-up, with key core components initially still sourced from the United States and Israel.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberger Druckmaschinen?
Concurrently, the company's core printing machinery business faces an unexpected challenge. Its hardware partner, Manroland Sheetfed, entered a protective shield proceeding in early March. This development forces Heidelberg to independently manage the sales and digital integration of their jointly developed Cartonmaster CX 145 machine, a task binding considerable unplanned resources.
Financially, however, the group's foundation appears solid. For the first nine months of its fiscal year, Heidelberg reported sales of €1.6 billion. Its adjusted EBITDA margin improved to 7.1 percent from 5.7 percent, with net income reaching €17 million. Based on this performance, management reaffirmed its full-year sales target of €2.35 billion.
In a move signaling confidence in the ongoing corporate transformation, Heidelberg's supervisory board proactively extended the contracts of its top executives. CEO Jürgen Otto's tenure was prolonged until July 2029, while sales board member David Schmedding's contract now runs until June 2031. Supervisory board chairman Martin Sonnenschein cited "strategic clarity" and credited the duo with creating financial flexibility and implementing key strategic decisions.
The coming months will be critical for assessing the dual-track strategy. The company will present its complete fourth-quarter and full-year figures on June 10, 2026, offering a clearer view of whether core business margins can sustain the new investments. Shortly after, on July 23, the management board will face shareholders at the annual general meeting. For now, the market's verdict on the drone defense pivot is decisively positive, but tangible contract wins with critical infrastructure operators will be the first concrete sign that the demonstration can evolve into a sustainable business.
