Heavy Tech Exposure Weighs on Major Global ETF

The iShares Core MSCI World ETF's heavy tech allocation turned from strength to liability, driving a 1.5% single-day loss and contributing to a YTD decline of roughly 4%.

A significant concentration in technology stocks has recently turned from a strength to a liability for the iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF USD (Acc). The fund experienced notable downward pressure in the final trading sessions of March 2026, primarily driven by weakness in its largest sector holding.

Portfolio Concentration Creates Headwinds

The fund’s substantial allocation to the technology sector, representing between 25% and 27% of its total portfolio, is its single largest position by a wide margin. This heavy exposure became a primary source of drag late in the month. Market data indicates the ETF’s 1.5% decline on March 27 at the London exchange was largely attributable to poor performance in technology and financial holdings, which together account for approximately 42% of the portfolio.

Year-to-date, the ETF is now showing a loss of roughly 4%. This negative performance is mirrored in its German trading line, which has shed nearly 7% over a 30-day period.

Diversification Provides Limited Buffer

Despite holding 1,310 positions across 23 developed countries and being one of the world's largest physically replicated ETFs with around $127 billion in assets under management, the fund’s broad diversification offered only partial protection. Sectors such as industrials (about 12%), healthcare (just under 10%), and consumer cyclical (approximately 9%) help cushion volatility but have been unable to fully offset the pronounced weakness in tech.

The fund’s structure remains solid, featuring a total expense ratio of 0.20% and high liquidity supported by nearly 983 million shares in circulation. Nevertheless, the ETF is currently trading well below its 52-week high of $134.89 and has broken below its 50-day moving average. Any potential for stabilization as the second quarter begins will depend heavily on the trajectory of the technology sector in the coming weeks.
