A routine drill program at Graphite One’s Alaska project has delivered an unexpected geological twist. Core samples from the Graphite Creek deposit contained not just graphite but also magnet-grade rare earths such as neodymium and dysprosium. The company plans to test extraction methods alongside a US national laboratory later this year, raising the prospect of a secondary revenue stream that could transform the economics of what was already an ambitious domestic supply chain venture.

The regulatory calendar, however, remains the most immediate pressure point. All key federal permits for the mine must be in hand by 29 September 2026 — a hard deadline that keeps the target of starting construction in 2027 within reach. The project sits on the FAST-41 list, a government fast-track programme that compresses environmental reviews. The US Army is steering the process, and the schedule has held so far. But the public consultation has been rocky. Of the 301 comments filed during the Section 404 permitting stage, more than 57% raised concerns, over a quarter opposed the project outright, and only 16.6% voiced support. Authorities are currently weighing a streamlined environmental assessment but could revert to a fuller review, which would push the timeline out.

Graphite One’s industrial blueprint stretches from Alaska to Ohio. At the mine site, it aims to produce graphite concentrate at 95% purity, then ship it to a modular processing plant in Ohio. That facility is due to start operations in 2028 with an initial annual capacity of 48,000 tonnes of anode material. By 2031, the company expects to reach 169,000 tonnes per year — enough to supply more than two million mid-sized electric vehicles, according to its estimates. Lucid Group has already signed a non-binding offtake agreement for the Ohio output, and Taiga Mining retains a nearly 20% stake in the developer.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphite One?

Financing the project requires a patchwork of sources. The US Export-Import Bank has issued non-binding letters of interest covering $2.07 billion, roughly 70% of the estimated capital costs. Formal loan applications are expected later in 2026. For the remaining gap, management is in talks with major North American investment banks. In February, a share placement raised C$35 million to fund ongoing environmental studies, while a separate application for grants from the EXIM Bank is due this year.

The competitive landscape has grown more crowded. Two rival US graphite projects — one in Alabama, another in New York — received FAST-41 status earlier this year, giving them a clearer permitting track. Meanwhile, a US trade investigation into Chinese anode material ended without punitive tariffs after the International Trade Commission found no material injury to domestic industry. That leaves Graphite One without the protective duty buffer some investors had hoped for, especially given that China controls more than 95% of global anode processing.

On the stock market, the recent milestones have done little to lift the shares. The stock trades at around €0.75, down roughly 36% since the start of the year and about half the level of its late-January peak. The company acknowledges that the equity valuation reflects the unresolved permitting risk and the financing gaps still to be closed.

The rare earths add a wild card to the equation. If the 2026 tests confirm economic recoverability, the discovery could turn the Alaska deposit into a dual-commodity asset, strengthening the investment case at a moment when tariff protection has vanished and rivals are closing in. All of it converges on that single date in late September, when the fate of Graphite Creek — and by extension the Ohio processing plant — will become clearer.
