Graphite One's Rare Earth Discovery Adds a New Layer to Alaska's Permitting Countdown

Graphite One has quietly transformed its Alaska asset from a single-commodity story into a dual?resource play. Independent laboratory tests at the Graphite Creek project returned elevated concentrations of magnet and heavy rare earths, with the heavier elements making up 85% of the total rare earth content. Fourteen distinct magnet or heavy rare?earth elements were identified in garnet samples taken from the area that February’s feasibility study designated as the planned open pit. Among them were dysprosium, yttrium, and scandium – metals critical for high?strength magnets and defence?related technologies.
The discovery could give the project a second strategic leg. Graphite One intends to spend the remainder of 2026 working with a U.S. national laboratory on extraction methods for those rare earths. If successful, it would mean the Alaska mine could eventually produce both graphite for battery anodes and heavy rare earths for permanent magnets, all from the same ore body. The geopolitical backdrop reinforces the logic: China clamped down on magnet rare?earth exports in February 2024 and tightened graphite outflows in December 2024, making any domestic source of both commodities a politically powerful proposition.
For now, however, the market is focused on the permitting timeline. Graphite Creek is enrolled in the federal FAST?41 programme, with a final decision from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers pencilled in for 29 September 2026. That date is the single biggest catalyst for the equity. The stock closed on Friday at €0.73, down 0.41% on the day but up 1.10% for the week. The year?to?date decline remains steep at 37.62%, and the shares are trading roughly 6% below their 50?day moving average. The MACD has flipped negative, a short?term warning that keeps the stock sensitive to any news on the regulatory front.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphite One?
Financing is tightly tied to that calendar. The Export?Import Bank of the United States has issued revised, non?binding letters of interest totalling US$2.07 billion — US$670 million for the mine and processing plant in Alaska and US$1.4 billion for the anode material facility planned for Warren, Ohio. The caveat is the “non?binding” label. Formal credit applications will only be submitted once permitting milestones are met. In February, Graphite One raised C$35 million through a public placement to keep engineering, environmental reviews, and equipment procurement on track until then.
Community relationships remain equally critical. Graphite One is seeking approval from the TSX Venture Exchange to extend the term of roughly 2.8 million warrants held by the Bering Straits Native Corporation. The proposed extension would push the expiry to September 2026 and keep the exercise price at C$1.21 per share. The move is less about near?term cash and more about signalling stability — a mine in Alaska cannot advance without solid local backing. The appointment of Lucille Carter as Vice President of Community Relations reinforces that effort. Carter, who previously held leadership roles at BSNC, brings deep regional ties and a track record of working with local stakeholders.
Graphite One’s challenge between now and late September is to demonstrate that both the rare?earth extraction and the permitting process can deliver results. The rare?earth findings add a valuable hedge, but they also complicate an already complex investment thesis. If the extraction tests prove economic, the project’s strategic importance jumps. If the permitting clock holds or slips, the stock’s technical weakness will likely reassert itself. For now, all eyes are on 29 September 2026 — the date when the political, financial, and operational pieces are supposed to lock together.
