Graphite One advances Alaska mine and Ohio processing plant under FAST-41, targeting 2026 permits and 2030 production to reduce US reliance on Chinese graphite for EVs and defense.

The United States imports virtually all of its graphite from China, a dependency that spans everything from electric-vehicle batteries to military hardware. Graphite One is working to break that chain with a mine in Alaska and a processing plant in Ohio, and the federal government is now providing a clear timeline for the key environmental permits.

On April 27, the company confirmed that its Graphite Creek project in Alaska is moving through the FAST-41 accelerated permitting program. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is leading the review, lists the status as "in process" and has set a target date of September 29, 2026, for completion of all federal agency reviews. The coordinated project plan calls for a 13.5-month review period, and the Corps reports that all interim milestones are on schedule.

Graphite Creek became the first mining project in Alaska to be added to the federal FAST-41 dashboard on June 2, 2025. The program is designed to speed up permitting without compromising environmental or regulatory standards — a distinction that CEO Anthony Huston emphasized, noting that FAST-41 delivers exactly what it was intended to: greater predictability and accountability across multiple federal agencies.

Ohio Plant to Start with Synthetic Feedstock

While the Alaska mine is the headline, the company is simultaneously advancing plans for a processing facility in Ohio that will convert graphite concentrate into high-grade anode material for EVs, energy storage, AI data centers, and defense applications. Graphite One intends to apply for FAST-41 status for this plant as well.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphite One?

The production ramp is staged. From mid-2027, the Ohio facility will initially run on synthetic graphite feedstock, producing 48,000 tonnes of anode material per year. Once concentrate shipments from Alaska begin in 2031, capacity will jump to 169,000 tonnes annually. The Alaska mine itself is slated to start production in 2030, with a 20-year mine life and an annual capacity of up to 175,000 tonnes of concentrate.

To bridge the gap before Alaska material arrives, the Ohio plant will start in 2028 using synthetic graphite, with capacity set to expand significantly later. When Alaska concentrate does flow, Graphite One targets nearly 170,000 tonnes of annual production. The U.S. Export-Import Bank has signaled interest in financing the buildout of this domestic supply chain with up to $2 billion.

Rare-Earth Bonus

Independent analyses have revealed high concentrations of dysprosium and scandium in the Graphite Creek deposit. Both are critical metals subject to strict Chinese export controls. A national U.S. laboratory is testing extraction methods this year. If successful, the company could gain a lucrative secondary revenue stream from rare-earth byproducts.

China produced 78 percent of the world's mined graphite last year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and controls an even larger share of processing into battery-grade material. For Graphite One, that dependency gives the permitting progress strategic weight.

Market Response

Investors have taken note of the operational milestones. On a monthly basis, the stock has gained nearly 24 percent, trading at $0.88 and consolidating slightly on Tuesday. That represents more than a doubling from the year's low of $0.42. After the April 27 update, the stock rose nearly 9 percent to C$1.27, hitting a two-week high. The market capitalization stands at roughly C$258 million.

The September 2026 deadline for the final permitting decision now looms as the most concrete catalyst. If the agencies give the green light, Graphite One can begin construction of the mine. Until then, the federal government's strict timeline is the single most important fundamental driver for the company — and it's ticking.
