The United States remains the only major industrial economy that imports 100 percent of its natural graphite, with China dominating global supply. Graphite One is betting that its Graphite Creek project in Alaska can break that stranglehold, and the company now has a clear regulatory timeline to prove it.

A 13-Month Countdown Begins

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers published a detailed permitting schedule in August 2025, setting a 13.5-month review period for the proposed open-pit mine roughly 60 kilometers north of Nome. The final decision is slated for September 29, 2026 — a date CEO Anthony Huston has called the project’s most critical milestone.

Graphite Creek was admitted into the federal FAST-41 program in June 2025, making it the first Alaska mining project to benefit from the streamlined permitting process. The program binds multiple federal agencies to a single, binding timeline without cutting corners on environmental standards. “FAST-41 has delivered exactly what it was designed for — more punctuality, predictability and accountability across multiple federal agencies,” Huston said.

The company confirmed on April 27 that the project remains on schedule, with the Army Corps currently handling the review.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphite One?

Ohio: The Next Piece of the Puzzle

While Alaska grabs the headlines, the company’s longer-term ambitions lie in Ohio. Graphite One plans to build a processing facility there that would convert raw graphite concentrate from Alaska into anode materials for electric vehicles, energy storage systems, AI data centers and defense applications.

The Ohio plant is designed as a modular facility. The first two modules, each with 25,000 tonnes of annual capacity, are expected to take three years for permitting and construction, putting the start of production in 2028. By 2031, the company aims to expand to seven modules with a combined capacity of 175,000 tonnes of graphite concentrate and 169,000 tonnes of anode material annually — enough, Graphite One says, to supply more than two million mid-sized electric vehicles.

Management is now preparing to submit the Ohio facility for FAST-41 coverage as well, a move that could accelerate the build-out of what the company calls a fully integrated domestic supply chain.

Market Reaction and Volatility

Investors have taken notice of the steady progress. The stock jumped 8.7 percent on April 27 following the project update, and has climbed roughly 23 percent over the past 30 days. Shares currently trade at $0.88, about 10 percent above their 50-day moving average.

Graphite One at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

But the year-to-date picture tells a different story. The stock remains down roughly 25 percent since January, underscoring the extreme volatility that comes with a pre-production mining venture. The path from explorer to producer is rarely a straight line, and Graphite One’s shareholders are being reminded of that daily.

What’s Next

With the Alaska permitting decision less than five months away and the Ohio FAST-41 application in preparation, Graphite One has two concrete milestones that will define its trajectory. The September 29, 2026 deadline for the mine will be the first major test of whether the company can turn its ambitious vision into a shovel-ready reality.
