Glencore's Strategic Edge: Coal as a Market Hedge

Geopolitical tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz are placing pressure on the global LNG market, creating a unique opportunity for select mining giants. Among them, Glencore stands out as a potential beneficiary. While many competitors face the burden of rising energy costs without a corresponding revenue boost, Glencore's positioning allows it to capitalize on this market dislocation.

A Fundamental Turnaround and Share Performance

The company's recent financial performance provides a solid foundation. After reporting a net loss of $1.6 billion the previous year, Glencore returned to profitability in 2025 with a net gain of $363 million. This operational turnaround is reflected in its equity valuation. Since hitting a low in April 2025, the share price has more than doubled, currently trading just below the three-year high reached on March 31.

This momentum is being supported by concrete capital returns to shareholders. A total of $2 billion in shareholder returns is underway, with the first dividend tranche having an ex-date of May 8. Investors are awaiting the production report for the first quarter, scheduled for April 30, which will offer initial insights into how much the company's core operations have gained from the current favorable market conditions.

The Thermal Coal Advantage

At the heart of Glencore's advantageous position is thermal coal. Since late February, Newcastle coal prices have been trading above $165 per ton—approximately 42% higher than the market consensus. Analysts at Bloomberg Intelligence identify coal as a promising alternative fuel should LNG shipments face disruptions, estimating that a gas-to-coal switch in Europe and Asia could involve 40 to 60 million tons.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Glencore?

Glencore is poised to benefit from this dynamic through a dual mechanism: its direct coal production and its substantial energy trading division. The trading arm can exploit arbitrage opportunities created by price dislocations between coal, LNG, and oil. This integrated structure leads Bloomberg Intelligence to conclude that Glencore is fundamentally better positioned than rivals like Rio Tinto or BHP, which are effectively "short energy."

In an extreme scenario of a prolonged regional conflict, Bloomberg Intelligence forecasts an annual profit for Glencore of $20 billion. This would represent a 14% increase over the prior year and significantly exceed the company's long-term expectations. Their models suggest coal prices could rise to $185 per ton following a one-to-two-month LNG supply interruption, potentially reaching $245 per ton if disruptions last three months or longer.

Contextualizing the 2022 Parallels

The current situation evokes memories of 2022, when Glencore posted record profits following the energy shock triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war. However, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Alon Olsha cautions that the landscape has shifted. European coal capacity has diminished since then, Northeast Asian utilities are locked into existing LNG contracts, and many Asian power grids already rely heavily on coal. The starting point is therefore different.

Glencore at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Should the geopolitical conflict resolve quickly, coal prices could see a notable correction. Nevertheless, Bloomberg Intelligence notes that even in that event, a prolonged outage at Qatar's Ras Laffan facility could keep prices supported above $125 per ton for months.
