A targeted inspection blitz by Germany’s Joint German Occupational Safety and Health Strategy (GDA) will run from June 8 to 12 in the state of Hessen, focusing exclusively on scaffolding on building sites. The decision to ramp up oversight follows grim statistics: between 2009 and 2023, falls accounted for roughly 31 percent of all serious or fatal workplace accidents in the country. Previous GDA checks revealed that only 21 percent of sites met required safety standards.

The heightened controls come during a week when a separate annual safety briefing for qualified electricians is scheduled in Weimar. On June 11, 2026, the BVE Weimar will host a mandatory refresher course for electricians, masters, and maintenance staff. The session covers eight teaching units, costs 270 euros per participant, and includes an accident analysis, a standards update for 2025/2026, and practical measurement exercises. Under German regulations such as DGUV Vorschrift 1, companies must regularly train their electrical specialists (EFK) and persons instructed in electrical safety (EuP), with certification typically valid for only one year.

The DEKRA Academy also offers nationwide training, both in person and as live online classes. Curriculum topics include the five safety rules, fire protection, and first aid in an electrical context. For workers seeking a basic qualification as an electrical specialist for defined tasks (EFKffT), DEKRA provides a theory module with 38 teaching units. Candidates need completed vocational training and must be at least 18 years old; a practical module is required for full certification.

Since February 2026, a new lightning protection standard has been in effect: the IEC standard series DIN EN IEC 62305-4 (VDE 0185-305-4). It governs the protection of electrical and electronic systems inside buildings against electromagnetic pulses from lightning strikes, aiming to prevent lasting damage to sensitive electronics. As system failures become more costly, the standard’s importance grows.

Smart building technology is also gaining traction. According to the Central Association of the German Electrical and Information Technology Trades (ZVEH), intelligent controls are no longer merely a comfort feature but a genuine economic factor. Electrical drives account for up to 65 percent of energy costs, and smart regulation offers substantial savings potential.

Meanwhile, the demand for skilled electrical workers remains high. In the semiconductor manufacturing sector in Itzehoe, for example, companies are actively recruiting technicians for maintenance and repair. The collectively agreed gross annual salary starts at 49,500 euros.

Long-term efforts to draw younger talent include initiatives like AusbildungsOffensive-Bayern, which uses virtual-reality headsets. Last year, roughly 50,000 teenagers used VR goggles to explore careers in metalworking and electrical trades, with the goal of sparking interest in technical apprenticeships while still in school.
