A sharp reversal in sentiment hit technology shares on Thursday, with Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) seeing its stock decline by more than 6%. This move effectively erased the majority of the previous day's substantial gains. The catalyst was external, stemming from a breakdown in international diplomacy rather than any company-specific news.

Sector-Wide Pressure from Failed Negotiations

The downturn followed Tehran's formal rejection of a 15-point peace proposal on Thursday, which prompted a stern warning from U.S. President Trump. Market risk appetite subsequently collapsed. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.14%, and technology stocks bore the brunt of the selling pressure. AMD's drop of over 6% was comparable to declines seen in Meta (-7%) and Micron (-5.49%).

This performance stood in stark contrast to Wednesday's trading session. Just a day earlier, AMD shares had advanced by approximately 7%. That rally was fueled by optimism for a potential ceasefire and positive signals surrounding AI chip developments from Arm Holdings. Additional support came from reports of planned CPU price increases, a response to tight supply and robust demand from the data center sector.

The Oil Price Factor and AI Investment

Rising crude oil prices present a particular complication in this environment. Energy costs can constitute up to 60% of data center operating expenses. A scenario of persistently high energy prices could lead AI companies to scale back their purchases of GPUs, which would ultimately dampen overall semiconductor demand.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?

Some market analysts, however, perceive a potential opportunity for AMD within this challenge. The company could gain market share as a more cost-effective alternative to Nvidia, especially in a climate where budgets become more sensitive.

Strong Fundamentals Amidst Stock Volatility

Despite the share price weakness, AMD's underlying business metrics remain robust. For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, revenue grew 34% to $10.3 billion. The full-year net income for 2025 increased by 164%, reaching $4.3 billion. AMD's CPU market share now stands at 29.2%.

A significant legal overhang was resolved in March. On March 9, 2026, AMD reached a multi-year licensing agreement with Adeia, settling a patent dispute related to 3D V-Cache technology. This agreement eliminated the risk of potential import bans.
