A sharp spike in crude oil prices, driven by escalating Middle Eastern tensions, weighed heavily on European equity markets this week. The German DAX index felt particular pressure, briefly dipping below the psychologically significant 23,000-point threshold on Friday before staging a modest recovery. The trigger was a series of attacks on oil infrastructure in Bahrain and tankers near the Iraqi coast, which propelled Brent crude prices toward the $100-per-barrel mark.

Broader Economic Concerns Take Center Stage

Currently, geopolitical developments in the Persian Gulf are overshadowing traditional economic data as the primary market driver. Analysts express concern that soaring energy costs will elevate production expenses worldwide, with Germany's export-oriented industrial sector positioned to be disproportionately affected. Thomas Gitzel, Chief Economist at VP Bank, noted that increased energy prices are likely to curb investment appetite in the global manufacturing sector, a trend that would hit German industry hard. Echoing this sentiment, researchers at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) suggested that while the ongoing conflict may not halt Germany's economic recovery, it could apply a significant brake on its momentum.

The European Central Bank (ECB) maintained its key interest rate at 2%, as widely anticipated by markets. Financial experts consider an interest rate cut at the upcoming March 19th meeting to be improbable. The prevailing view is that upward pressure on energy costs—and the consequent downward pressure on indices like the DAX—will persist as long as the situation in the Persian Gulf remains unstable.

Sector Performance Reveals Clear Divergences

Risk aversion permeated the trading session, but losses were not evenly distributed. Financial stocks were among the hardest hit, with Deutsche Bank shares falling 3.8% and Commerzbank declining 2.3%. The automotive sector faced additional headwinds following a report from BMW detailing declines in both revenue and profit.

Lufthansa encountered a dual challenge: rising jet fuel prices compounded the ongoing negative impact of a pilots' strike on its share price.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DAX?

In a stark contrast to the broader market downturn, online fashion retailer Zalando surged more than 13%. This significant gain was fueled by the company's announcement of a new share buyback program, providing a rare bright spot in an otherwise gloomy session.

Technical Picture Points to Continued Fragility

From a technical analysis perspective, the DAX's position appears strained. The index is currently trading approximately 5.4% below its 50-day moving average and has shed nearly 4.5% since the start of the year. The 23,000-point level is now viewed as a critical support zone. A sustained break below this level would bring the annual low around 22,928 points into focus. On the upside, the first major resistance is identified at the March 10th daily high of 24,067 points; only a decisive move above this level would improve the short-term technical outlook for the index.
