Equinor's shares have climbed approximately 50% since the start of the year, reaching a new 52-week high on Friday. This significant advance reflects the Norwegian energy giant's growing status as a reliable anchor in an unstable market, a position amplified by current geopolitical pressures on global oil supply chains, including tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Strategic Alliance Focuses on Energy Security

A key development underscoring this strategic importance was the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Oslo on March 14. The talks with Norwegian government officials and Equinor leadership centered on energy security, coinciding with the International Energy Agency's (IEA) coordination of an emergency release of 400 million barrels of oil. Canada's contribution to this release is 23.6 million barrels.

A major topic was the Bay du Nord offshore project, located off the coast of Newfoundland. Carney highlighted the venture as particularly attractive. With an estimated investment volume of around $14 billion USD, the project is designed to deliver oil with a relatively low CO? intensity. A final investment decision is scheduled for 2027, with production targeted to begin in 2031.
