From Chatbots to Chemists: Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy Pill Surges as Canadian Generics Undercut Ozempic

Novo Nordisk's Wegovy leads weight-loss drug search results on AI chatbots, but generic semaglutide enters Canadian pharmacies at one-third cost. US patent protection until 2032, Wegovy pill launch offsetting headwinds.

Novo Nordisk’s GLP-1 drugs command nearly a fifth of all AI chatbot search results for weight-loss treatments, according to a new visibility index. Wegovy leads the pack with a 19% share, followed by Eli Lilly’s Zepbound, while Ozempic claims 13%. The digital dominance signals strong brand recognition as patients increasingly turn to tools like ChatGPT and Claude for health information. Yet on the ground, the Danish pharma giant is confronting a far less virtual challenge: generic semaglutide has just hit Canadian pharmacy shelves at roughly one-third of the brand price.

Two manufacturers received approvals from Canada’s health authority this week. Apotex, headquartered in Canada, began shipping its generic version on Monday, while India’s Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories confirmed its product had arrived in selected pharmacies, with wider availability expected in the coming days. The market entry was enabled by the expiration of certain patent protections for the semaglutide molecule in Canada, China and Brazil. Crucially, Novo Nordisk’s US patent remains in force until 2032, and the US market accounts for more than half of the company’s global revenue. Novo Nordisk Canada said it is evaluating countermeasures such as discount programmes and cheaper own-brand products, but the magnitude of the threat is already reflected in the company’s outlook.

In early May, management raised its full-year guidance for 2026, now expecting constant-currency revenue and operating profit to decline between 4% and 12%, a narrower range than previously flagged. The improvement came despite persistent pricing pressure in the US and the arrival of generic competition in international markets. The first quarter offered a mixed picture: obesity sales grew 22% on a currency-adjusted basis, but US revenue fell 11% as lower selling prices ate into volume gains.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

The company’s strategic counterweight is the new Wegovy pill. Since its US launch in January, it has generated more than two million prescriptions and contributed 2.25 billion Danish kroner in Q1 revenue. The oral formulation is central to Novo Nordisk’s global rollout plans as it seeks to defend its market share against both generics and rival Eli Lilly.

A separate legal front remains open. The Singapore Court of Appeal on Thursday upheld an injunction against biotech firm KBP Biosciences and its founder, pending arbitration over the termination of a phase 3 study for Ocedurenon, a drug Novo Nordisk acquired from KBP. The court explicitly noted it had made no finding of dishonesty, leaving that to the arbitration process.

At current levels of around €38.87, Novo Nordisk’s stock is up roughly 13% over the past month but still down 13% year-to-date and more than 44% below its 52-week high. From a technical perspective, the shares have recovered meaningfully from the March trough of €30.48. The RSI sits at 55 and the price has climbed above its 50-day moving average, suggesting room to extend the rally — provided the generic threat does not spread beyond Canada faster than expected.
