Eighty-four percent of patients who undergo hip or knee replacement surgery are now mobile on the first day after the operation, according to fresh data presented at the Congress of the German Society for Endoprosthetics in Munich. That figure stood at just 30 percent in earlier years. The turnaround hinges on specialized Fast-Track nurses, structured patient education, and digital aids.

Hospitals in and around Munich are deploying wearable devices and a dedicated app to speed recovery. The Klinikum Ebersberg, which recertifies regularly under the EndoCert standard, demonstrated most recently in June 2026 that patients could walk independently 48 hours after hip replacement.

Robot-Assisted Precision and a Wearable Hand Exoskeleton

Robotics are moving into the operating theatre, too. Helios Klinikum Meiningen will begin using a robot-assisted system for knee replacements on 24 June 2026. The technology relies on CT scans to build a 3D model of the knee, enabling more accurate prosthesis placement.

Meanwhile, an international research team involving the Medical University of Vienna and the Technical University of Munich is testing a wearable hand exoskeleton. Combined with neurostimulation, the device improved finger movement and grip control in 14 study participants. The findings appeared in Science Advances in 2026.

GLP-1 Drugs Linked to Reduced Physical Activity

A surprising finding came from the ENDO-2026 study, which tracked 753 participants using GLP-1 medications commonly prescribed for weight loss. The average daily step count dropped from 5,047 to 4,487, and the time spent in brisk movement also declined. For chronic pain patients who rely on exercise, this could become an important factor.

Osteopathy for Back Pain: Still No Clear Benefit

While surgical techniques advance, conservative methods face scrutiny. The IGeL-Monitor continued to rate osteopathy for non-specific back pain as unclear in 2026. About 85 percent of all back pain cases are classified as non-specific. The therapy sessions cost between 80 and 150 euros, but critics argue existing studies are often overinterpreted. At least there is no evidence of harm.

Multimodal Therapy and Mindfulness Gain Ground

Pain specialists are increasingly turning to multimodal treatment concepts. At a patient forum in Bochum in mid-June 2026, experts discussed combining different therapeutic approaches. Neurologist Astrid Gendolla and psychologist Kirsten Hilger stressed that therapeutic alliance and attendance at specialized pain centers are key for managing chronic conditions.

Complementary approaches are gaining traction:

  • Music therapy: The German Music Therapy Association confirms pain-relieving effects. Alexander Wormit of SRH University Heidelberg recommends active music-making or synchronized movement.
  • Yoga and meditation: On World Yoga Day, 21 June 2026, experts cited studies showing reduced stress hormones and improved resilience. The Ortenau Klinikum Offenburg also offers Zen meditation.

The 2026 committee report from the professional societies DGOU, DGOOC, and DGU, titled "Taking New Paths," addresses demographic change and the shortage of skilled workers, with a focus on outpatient care and digital infrastructure.
