Fresnillo Breaks Technical Barrier as Portfolio Restructuring Gathers Pace

Fresnillo shares break above 200-day moving average on heavy volume, while the miner completes Coneto silver-gold project sale and faces labor tensions in Zacatecas.

Fresnillo’s stock surged through a key technical level on Wednesday, with the mining group simultaneously advancing its strategic overhaul by offloading a Mexican exploration asset. The dual developments have put the silver and gold producer firmly in the spotlight.

Shares in the London-listed miner jumped 14.72 percent to €40.52, smashing through the 200-day moving average of €33.09. The move was accompanied by unusually heavy trading volumes, with more than 745,000 shares changing hands. Market participants see the breakout as a potential shift in long-term momentum for the stock.

The rally was part of a broader sector uplift, with peers Anglo American climbing 6.3 percent and Endeavour Mining advancing 5.1 percent. Investors have been rotating into precious metals producers as gold and silver prices hold firm.

Mexican Asset Sale Completed

Behind the scenes, Fresnillo has been reshaping its portfolio. The company completed the sale of the Coneto silver-gold project in Durango on May 4, with Silver Viper Minerals taking full control. Fresnillo received 15.63 million shares in Silver Viper as consideration, representing roughly a 13 percent stake in the Canadian-listed junior. The deal carries an estimated value of around $15 million.

The Coneto project, which contains over 40 quartz veins, had been a non-core holding for Fresnillo as management focuses resources on its primary operations.

Production and Labour Challenges

Operationally, the first quarter delivered mixed results. Silver production fell 8.5 percent quarter-on-quarter to 11.1 million ounces, though management stressed this was within expectations. CEO Octavio Alvídrez is pushing ahead with infrastructure projects including a new leaching plant at the Herradura mine and work on the Saucito shaft, aimed at stabilising output. The full-year silver production target remains between 42 million and 46.5 million ounces.

However, social tensions are simmering in the key Zacatecas region. Workers staged demonstrations on May Day, demanding adjustments to profit-sharing arrangements and social benefits. Local security forces have stepped up patrols in the city of Fresnillo as part of broader crime prevention efforts. The outcome of negotiations with unions will be closely watched by investors.

Analyst Caution and Dividend Focus

Despite the share price surge, analysts remain cautious. The consensus rating on Fresnillo stands at “Reduce,” with six of nine covering institutions holding a neutral stance and two recommending selling the stock.

Attention is now turning to the upcoming annual general meeting in London, scheduled for late May. Shareholders will vote on the proposed final dividend of approximately 79.75 pence per share. The conversion rate for British investors will determine the exact payouts.

Should the stock hold above the 200-day moving average, the previous year high of €49.88 could come back into play. For now, the trajectory of precious metal prices will remain the primary driver of Fresnillo’s fortunes.
