Four in Five Scaffolding Inspections Fail in Germany as Authorities Sound Alarm on Construction Safety

A targeted inspection week by three Hessian government presidencies — Gießen, Darmstadt and Kassel — has revealed a grim reality on German construction sites. Nearly 80 percent of the scaffolding checked between June 8 and 12, 2026, failed to meet safety standards. Only 21 percent of the inspected workplaces complied with the applicable regulations.
Behind the crackdown lies a persistent killer: falls from height. According to data covering 2009 to 2023, roughly 31 percent of all fatal workplace accidents in Germany are caused by falls. The action week aims to dramatically improve the compliance rate, which regulators described as alarming.

Meanwhile, Deutsche Bahn is responding to a different kind of workplace hazard — deliberate attacks on its staff. From June through December 2026, the company’s Mobile Support Unit (MUG) in Berlin will test special protective helmets. The pilot comes after the rail operator recorded 2,690 assaults on employees in 2025, an 11 percent increase from the previous year. Firecrackers and rockets pose particular risks to security personnel. If the trial succeeds, the helmets will be introduced nationwide in 2027.
Safety upgrades are also afoot in private homes and commercial buildings. Thousands of smoke detectors across Germany are reaching the end of their operational life in 2026, especially in Brandenburg and Bremen — two states that mandated detectors early. The DIN 14676 standard requires replacement after ten years, as ageing sensors lose reliability.
Lightning protection rules have also tightened. Since February 2026, the updated DIN EN IEC 62305-4 standard has clarified inspection and maintenance requirements for electronic systems. The roofing trade association recommends semi-annual inspections and annual maintenance for flat roofs; failure to comply can void insurance coverage.
