Small bakeries, carpentry shops and grain mills across Germany have long faced a painful choice: pay thousands of euros for an external consultant to produce mandatory explosion-safety documents, or risk expensive penalties. A new software platform, now in beta, aims to change that equation by offering a cloud-based alternative starting at €29 a month.

The tool is designed for the more than 25,000 businesses in the DACH region that must comply with ATEX directives and the German Betriebssicherheitsverordnung (BetrSichV), which require a formal explosion-protection document. Instead of a static paper folder assembled after a costly on-site inspection, the software creates a living digital file that can be set up in an afternoon. Any changes inside the bakery, workshop or mill automatically update the safety assessment. The data is stored on servers in Germany, compliant with the GDPR.

Traditional expert visits typically run between €975 and €8,000. The new solution charges monthly subscriptions: €29 for single-site operations and up to €149 for multi-location businesses. During the introductory phase, companies get a 50% discount for the first year. The goal, according to the developers, is to slash the cost barrier for legally compliant workplace safety.

Yet explosion protection is only one part of a larger compliance puzzle that is about to get significantly more expensive for German SMEs. In 2026, stricter rules on document archiving under the GoBD (principles of proper digital accounting) take full effect, following the Bürokratieentlastungsgesetz IV passed in 2025. Booking receipts must be stored for eight years, annual financial statements for ten. Separately, the EU’s NIS2 directive has applied since October 2024 to companies above a certain size in critical sectors, with penalties of up to €10 million for violations of IT security obligations. GoBD breaches can cost up to €25,000.

Meanwhile, physical safety monitoring is also going high-tech. At the INTERSCHUTZ 2026 trade fair, manufacturers showcased four-legged robots equipped with thermal imaging cameras and gas detectors that autonomously patrol hazardous environments. The construction industry is testing combinations of stationary sensors and mobile robots. The trend points clearly toward specialised software plus modern sensor systems that make safety management both more efficient and more legally watertight.
