The gap between ambition and execution at Fermi is widening by the day. While the company presses ahead with plans to build the largest private power grid in the United States, a leadership vacuum and the absence of a single signed tenant for its flagship data center campus have left investors questioning whether the vision will ever materialize.

UBS delivered the latest blow, downgrading the stock from "Buy" to "Neutral" and slashing its price target from $8.00 to $6.00. The market responded swiftly, with shares tumbling more than 8% to €4.10 — barely above the 52-week low of €4.06. The year-to-date decline now stands at roughly 45%, though the secondary source puts the loss closer to 41% as of Monday's close of €4.46.

A Leadership Void at the Worst Possible Time

Both the chief executive and chief financial officer departed Fermi within recent weeks, leaving a strategic hole at the top. A permanent CEO is not expected for another three months, hampering the company's ability to navigate a critical juncture. To steady the ship, Larry Kellerman has been appointed to the board of directors. The industry veteran, who previously served as Chief Power Officer, is widely credited as the architect behind the Amarillo energy infrastructure and is expected to provide continuity during the search.

On the finance side, Rob Masson has stepped in as interim CFO. These moves form part of what the company calls its "Fermi 2.0" strategy, a plan management insists it will not abandon despite mounting pressure from a major shareholder.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Fermi?

The Matador Problem

The core challenge remains in Texas. Fermi's marquee "Project Matador" — a sprawling data center campus in Amarillo — still lacks an anchor tenant. Without a signed lease for the planned 200 megawatts of capacity, the timeline for generating any revenue remains murky. The company is simultaneously negotiating deadline extensions with the Texas Tech University System for land lease milestones.

The sheer scale of the broader 17-gigawatt project, designed to power AI data centers, has not shielded Fermi from doubts about its near-term financial viability. The company posted a net loss of roughly $486 million in its first full fiscal year, while negative free cash flow exceeded $600 million, putting significant strain on liquidity.

Funding Secured, But Pressure Mounts

Fermi did manage to secure financing of up to $156.25 million to support its energy ambitions. Yet the market remains deeply skeptical, with annualized volatility exceeding 120% underscoring the jitters surrounding the stock.

That skepticism is fueled in part by internal strife. The co-founder and largest shareholder is pushing for an immediate sale of the company — a move the board has so far rejected. An extraordinary general meeting scheduled for late May 2026 will determine the company's future direction and could result in a board overhaul.

Fermi at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What Comes Next

Mid-May 2026 will bring the next quarterly earnings release, offering management a chance to demonstrate tangible progress. The market will be watching closely for any signs of anchor tenant commitments, especially given that the new leadership team must show concrete advancements in grid development by year-end.

For now, Fermi finds itself caught between a transformative vision and a precarious present — a developer with enormous plans, empty offices, and a clock that keeps ticking.
