Exxon Mobil Corporation has successfully deployed a fully automated geological drilling system for the first time in the industry. This groundbreaking operation took place at the Stabroek block offshore Guyana. The technology integrates real-time geological data directly with drilling controls, a development expected to significantly boost efficiency in tapping new oil reservoirs.

Operational Milestones and Technical Partners

The innovative system was developed through a collaboration with Halliburton, Noble, and Sekal. At its core is Halliburton's LOGIX platform, which merges resistivity measurements and automated drilling control into a single digital workflow. By continuously analyzing subsurface data, the system can adjust drilling parameters instantly. This process eliminates the traditional lag time between data interpretation and on-site operational changes.

The results from this inaugural application were substantial. Approximately 470 meters of a horizontal well section were placed, with the reservoir section completed about 15% ahead of schedule. Furthermore, certain pipe-tripping procedures were reduced by roughly one-third.

Financial and Production Context

This technological advancement coincides with a period of robust production growth for the energy giant. Exxon Mobil reported record production of 5.0 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in the fourth quarter of 2025. This output was driven primarily by its operations in Guyana and the Permian Basin. For the full year 2025, the company averaged 4.7 million barrels per day, marking its highest annual production level in over four decades. The firm is targeting average daily production of around 4.9 million barrels for 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Exxon Mobil?

The project pipeline in Guyana continues to expand. Exxon Mobil recently submitted an environmental impact assessment for the Longtail project, which would be the first planned non-associated gas development in the country and the eighth endeavor in the Stabroek block. Other developments, including Uaru and Whiptail, are already under construction and slated to begin production in 2026 and 2027, respectively. The Hammerhead project is scheduled for 2029.

Reflecting this operational strength, Exxon Mobil's share price is trading near its 52-week high of 136.76 euros. The equity has advanced approximately 30% since the start of the year.
