The satellite operator Eutelsat Communications has successfully bolstered its financial foundation for a significant corporate transformation. With its traditional television business continuing to decline, the company is aggressively pursuing expansion in space-based internet connectivity. A recently completed multi-billion euro bond placement provides long-term security for this strategy, although ambitions for certain ground-based assets have been curtailed by government intervention.

Strategic Refinancing Extends Debt Maturity

Eutelsat has finalized a comprehensive balance sheet restructuring through a €1.5 billion bond issuance. The offering was split into two tranches: €850 million with a maturity date in 2031 carrying a 5.75% coupon, and €650 million maturing in 2033 with a 6.25% coupon. Market reception appears robust, as indicated by the fact that the coordinating bank, BNP Paribas, did not need to engage in supporting purchases.

Proceeds from the bond sale will be used primarily for refinancing purposes. The company intends to redeem more expensive existing debts that are due in 2027 and 2029. This strategic move pushes the company's major repayment horizon well into the next decade, simultaneously freeing up liquidity to fund its operational pivot. The formal settlement for the bonds is scheduled for this coming Thursday.

A Fundamental Shift in Revenue Drivers

Recent half-year financial results underscore the profound change underway in Eutelsat's business model. The legacy video segment, once the company's cash cow, is contracting. Revenue from this division fell by nearly €45 million, reflecting the ongoing decline of linear television broadcasting.

Conversely, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) connectivity division is emerging as the new engine for growth. Revenue from this segment surged approximately 60% to reach €110.5 million. Demand for in-flight internet connectivity is a particularly strong driver, with the number of installations multiplying sixfold over a six-month period. Connectivity solutions now represent 56% of total business, having overtaken the video segment as the primary revenue source.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?

French Government Intervention on Ground Assets

A setback for the company's plans came with the failed divestment of its ground infrastructure assets. Eutelsat had aimed to generate roughly €550 million through a partial sale to private equity investors. This deal was blocked by the French government.

As the state holds a nearly 30% stake, making it the largest single shareholder, and classifies the antenna infrastructure as strategically vital for both civilian and military applications, Minister Roland Lescure refused to grant approval. While management has stressed that this does not jeopardize the financial outlook for the current fiscal year, the anticipated cash injection from the sale will not materialize.

The company reaffirmed its annual targets, continuing to anticipate stable overall revenue and a net debt-to-EBITDA ratio of approximately 2.7x. The critical test of whether the LEO division can maintain its current growth momentum will come with the release of the next quarterly figures on May 12, 2026.
