Eutelsat’s Strategic Push: Billions Invested in Satellite Fleet and Aviation Venture
22.01.2026 - 11:21:05 | boerse-global.de
The European satellite operator Eutelsat is accelerating the expansion of its OneWeb division through a major new airline partnership and a multi-billion euro investment in new spacecraft. This aggressive strategy represents a firm commitment to the competitive Low Earth Orbit (LEO) connectivity market, raising questions about whether the potential growth justifies the substantial capital expenditure.
This ambitious growth plan is backed by a strengthened financial position. In December 2025, Eutelsat concluded a capital increase of 1.5 billion euros. Following this transaction, the French state holds just under 30 percent of the company's shares. The fresh capital is intended to fund planned investments of 4 billion euros through 2029 and to reduce the net debt to EBITDA ratio to 2.5x.
In reaction to the improved balance sheet, Deutsche Bank upgraded its rating on Eutelsat shares from "Sell" to "Hold." The bank maintained its price target at 2.30 euros, reflecting the reduced risk premium associated with the company's finances.
Core Business Provides Stability
While the LEO segment is the designated growth engine, Eutelsat's traditional television broadcasting business continues to deliver essential baseline cash flow. Demonstrating this stability, the Swiss TV platform Kabelio recently extended its contract for the Hotbird satellite position ahead of schedule, securing services for an additional five years until 2031. This move guarantees Eutelsat long-term revenue in an otherwise dynamic market.
Company management forecasts total revenue to reach between 1.5 and 1.7 billion euros by the 2028-2029 fiscal year. A critical factor in achieving this goal will be realizing the targeted 50 percent year-on-year growth in LEO revenue, which is anticipated once new satellite capacity becomes operational starting in 2026.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?
Billion-Euro Satellite Order to Build Capacity
The infrastructure for this expansion is being secured through a massive fleet upgrade. Eutelsat has placed an order with Airbus Defence and Space for a total of 440 new OneWeb satellites. The final tranche of 340 units was confirmed in mid-January, bringing the total contract value to approximately 2.2 billion euros.
Production at the facility in Toulouse, France, is scheduled to enable initial deliveries by the end of 2026, with satellite launches planned for the period between 2027 and 2029. To decrease reliance on its U.S. competitor SpaceX, Eutelsat has also secured launch capacity with MaiaSpace, a subsidiary of ArianeGroup.
Aviation Sector Targeted for Growth
A newly announced partnership with Spanish technology firm Immfly is designed to open access to previously untapped markets. The collaboration aims to establish OneWeb's high-speed connectivity services on narrow-body aircraft operated by low-cost carriers.
The technical solution integrates electronically steered antennas with Eutelsat's high-speed LEO network. A market launch is scheduled for 2026. This step is strategically significant for Eutelsat, as demand for reliable in-flight internet continues to rise, with existing solutions often criticized for high cost or limited speed.
