Satellite operator Eutelsat is accelerating its strategic shift away from its traditional television broadcasting roots. A recently launched initiative with the European Space Agency (ESA) exemplifies this transition, focusing on developing mobile connectivity solutions for deployment in crisis zones.

A Dual-Satellite Solution for Rapid Deployment

The project, named NOMADLINK, involves collaboration with UK-based technology firms Excelerate Technology and Livewire Digital. Its core objective is a specialized trailer unit capable of establishing a resilient broadband network within minutes in areas where ground infrastructure is damaged or non-existent. This system leverages a hybrid approach, utilizing both Eutelsat's geostationary (GEO) satellites and the low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation from OneWeb.

Scheduled to run until February 2027 and backed by the UK Space Agency, the program is designed to enhance the operational capabilities of emergency responders during natural disasters and other critical situations.

Demonstrating Operational Capability and Market Potential

For Eutelsat, this venture serves a crucial strategic purpose beyond its humanitarian application. Steve Mills, the company's Director of Government Business, positions NOMADLINK as a tangible demonstration of the rapid deployment potential inherent in the OneWeb network. Successfully integrating GEO and LEO assets into a mobile, operational unit provides a direct proof-of-concept for future government and business-to-business (B2B) contracts.

The company is actively cultivating new revenue streams to reduce its historical dependence on the TV broadcast market. Specialized connectivity services for emergency services, agricultural applications, and local government are key targets.
