Eutelsat Communications is navigating a significant strategic transformation. The satellite operator's future growth is increasingly tied to its low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband venture, OneWeb, which is expanding rapidly as its traditional video broadcasting business contracts.

For the first half of fiscal year 2025-26, Eutelsat reported total revenue of ?591.6 million. This represents a slight decline of 2.4% on a reported basis. The performance highlights a company in transition, with one division surging ahead while another recedes.

The standout performer was the Connectivity segment, driven by the OneWeb constellation. Revenue there jumped approximately 60% on a constant currency basis to ?110.5 million. This division now contributes a fifth of the group?s total revenue. Key growth drivers included new government service contracts and in-flight connectivity agreements, with the aviation order backlog now covering more than 1,500 aircraft.

Conversely, the Video segment remains under pressure. Revenue fell 12.3% to ?267 million. A significant factor is the impact of sanctions against Russian broadcasters, which management estimates will have a negative full-year effect of around ?16 million.

Strengthened Balance Sheet Amid Strategic Adjustments

Financially, Eutelsat has fortified its position. A ?1.5 billion capital increase and improved credit ratings led to a sharp reduction in net debt, which now stands at ?1.3 billion. The ratio of debt to EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) improved substantially from nearly 4 to a solid 2.0.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?

This strengthened balance sheet is particularly important following the collapse of a planned deal. At the end of January, the anticipated ?550 million sale of passive ground infrastructure to EQT fell through. While this required a slight adjustment to near-term leverage targets, the company's long-term financial objectives remain largely unchanged, according to management.

Operational Efficiency and Future Targets

Eutelsat is focusing on operational efficiency to support its strategic shift. To maintain the OneWeb constellation, the company has ordered 440 new satellites to replace aging units. Simultaneously, it canceled the order for "Flexsat Americas," a move expected to save over ?100 million in capital expenditures.

The strategic focus is clearly on migrating toward higher-margin connectivity services. This evolving business mix supports Eutelsat's ambitious target of achieving an EBITDA margin of approximately 65% by fiscal year 2028-29. The central question for investors is whether the explosive growth of space-based internet can fully counterbalance the structural declines in the company's legacy operations.
