The worldwide railway industry is on the cusp of a significant technological transition, presenting a substantial opportunity for satellite operator Eutelsat. The shift away from the legacy GSM-R standard toward the new Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) creates a structural opening for the company, one that extends well beyond providing basic passenger Wi-Fi.

Broadband Ambitions Beyond Passenger Connectivity

Eutelsat's strategic focus for this transition goes deeper than consumer internet access. The company is targeting critical operational technology systems, including signaling, train control, SCADA networks, and safety-critical communications. These essential systems will require re-networking during the FRMCS migration. Here, satellite connectivity is positioning itself as both a complementary layer and a resilient backup for terrestrial mobile networks, ensuring continuity in remote or challenging areas.

This rail sector initiative is supported by the broader growth trajectory of Eutelsat's low Earth orbit (LEO) business, driven by its OneWeb constellation. Revenues from OneWeb surged by 60% during the first half of the current fiscal year. The group is targeting LEO-related revenues of up to €280 million by the end of the fiscal year. Looking further ahead, Eutelsat projects total revenues will surpass €1.5 billion by the 2028/29 fiscal year, with LEO services expected to be the primary growth engine, offsetting declines in the traditional GEO satellite segment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?

Hardware Development and Global Footprint

Two key technology partnerships are central to advancing this rail strategy. Kymeta and Hughes Network Systems are developing and testing dedicated, rail-certified terminals for the OneWeb LEO network. Kymeta's contribution is the "Kestrel u5," a device designed for full-duplex connectivity. Built to IP68 and IP69K protection standards, it is engineered to withstand the harsh environmental conditions typical of railway operations.

Eutelsat is already managing railway projects across Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The LEO network delivers reliable broadband coverage on rural and cross-border routes—precisely the locations where traditional mobile network coverage is often weak or non-existent. The pace of the global FRMCS transition will be a key factor in determining whether Eutelsat can meet its ambitious revenue projections, with clearer indicators likely to emerge in the company's year-end financial results.
