The European satellite operator Eutelsat is accelerating the expansion of its low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation at a rapid pace. With a clear strategic goal of achieving global network coverage to rival dominant U.S. competitors, the company is committing billions to new technology while strengthening its alliance with aerospace giant Airbus.

Strategic Consolidation and Manufacturing Push

In a move to bolster Europe's competitive stance, Eutelsat's management, led by CEO Eva Berneke, is advocating for greater consolidation within the continent's satellite sector. The company has not opposed the proposed merger of the satellite activities of Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo. Operationally, Eutelsat's ties with Airbus are deepening significantly. Airbus is currently manufacturing 440 new LEO satellites for Eutelsat. This production run is intended to expand the existing OneWeb fleet to over 1,000 units in the near term, dramatically increasing worldwide broadband capacity.

Financial Backing and Launch Challenges

This ambitious technological leap requires substantial capital. Infrastructure investments are projected to reach approximately two billion euros by 2030. A major cost component remains rocket launches, which are estimated to consume up to 40% of total expenditures. To reduce reliance on single providers like SpaceX, Eutelsat's management is actively seeking alternative launch vehicles for future missions. Financially, the expansion plan is secured through a comprehensive refinancing package of over five billion euros, valid until 2031. Notably, the French state now acts as the company's principal shareholder.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?

Market participants have recently reacted with some caution to the significant capital requirements. Eutelsat shares closed at 2.09 euros on Tuesday. Despite this recent period of weakness, the stock still shows a solid year-to-date gain of 16.76 percent.

Pivoting to New Growth Frontiers

Eutelsat's strategic pivot from a traditional TV broadcast business to a modern connectivity provider is taking concrete shape. The next critical milestone on the agenda is obtaining a commercial license in India. Market analysts anticipate this formal approval sometime during 2026, which would grant Eutelsat direct access to one of Asia's largest and fastest-growing broadband connectivity markets.
