DIN EN 17975 sets EU-wide LOTO rules. Germany's DGUV reform eases small-firm burdens, enables digital care, and widens safety specialist eligibility.

A pan-European benchmark for controlling hazardous energy during maintenance work is now in place. The DIN EN 17975 standard – the first of its kind at EU level – sets unified requirements for the lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedure, covering electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and thermal energy sources as well as pressurised media and chemicals. Until now, most European companies followed the US OSHA norm. The new regulation details every step: energy isolation, locking, labelling, and documentation.

The release of DIN EN 17975 coincides with a broader reshuffle of Germany's occupational safety landscape. Since 1 January 2026, the reformed DGUV Vorschrift 2 has been in force. Its headline change: the threshold for simplified regular care jumped from 10 to 20 employees. That lifts a chunk of bureaucratic burden off small firms.

For the first time, the reform also permits digital care formats. Company doctors and safety specialists (SiFa) can now consult by phone or online – as long as the working conditions on site are already familiar and a physical inspection has taken place earlier. Up to one third of the total care time may be delivered digitally; in exceptional cases, that share can reach 50 percent.

Keeping up with evolving safety regulations means your risk documentation must stay current, too. A free Risk Assessment Toolkit gives you 41 ready-to-use templates and checklists covering fire safety, manual handling, first aid, and lone working — everything you need to document workplace hazards in a compliant, organised way. The pathway to becoming a safety specialist is widening, too. Beyond engineers and technicians, graduates in physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, or human medicine are now eligible for the SiFa qualification. Proof of further training must be submitted by all candidates.

Annual mandatory instruction remains untouched. Electricians (EFK) and persons instructed in electrical engineering (EuP) still need yearly training under DGUV Vorschrift 1 to keep their qualification valid. Content follows DIN VDE 0105 and covers the five safety rules plus fire protection in electrical installations.

Training providers such as DEKRA Akademie offer in-person courses in Leipzig and online sessions – for example, in August 2027. Fire safety officers face stricter demands: they must complete at least 16 teaching units within three years to meet DGUV, vfdb, and VdS requirements. A course covering the latest legal changes and risk assessments under ASR A2.3 is scheduled for early February 2027.

For the inspection of electrical equipment, experts point to TRBS 1203. There is no fixed interval for requalifying "persons qualified to test," but a three-year cycle has become standard practice – in step with the revision rhythm of VDE regulations.

Germany's electrical trades are also battling a workforce gap. Industry associations put the current shortage at around 60,000 skilled workers. The ZVEH has responded with a new partial-qualification set (TQ) for the training occupation of electronics technician for energy and building technology. Aimed at employees aged 25 or older, the programme consists of seven modules aligned with the official training regulation. The goal is the external examination for the journeyman's certificate. Modules can be completed online or in a hybrid format. Informational webinars are set for 26 and 30 June 2026.

Meanwhile, digital tools are penetrating planning processes. At Intersolar Europe in June 2026, manufacturers will showcase AI-driven configurators for firefighter switches on photovoltaic systems. These tools assist in designing complex commercial and industrial PV arrays, offering live previews and automated parts lists. The safety switches must comply with IEC 60947-3 to ensure reliable disconnection in case of fire.
