The Norwegian energy giant Equinor has significantly amplified its strategic focus on Brazil, unveiling two major investments within a 48-hour period. This aggressive push underscores Brazil's transformation into a pivotal growth market for the company's diversified energy portfolio.

Share Performance and Analyst Outlook

Equinor's shares have seen substantial appreciation in recent weeks, currently trading near their 52-week high at €35.73. The valuation picture, however, is mixed. Market experts are divided, with some recent analyst actions including upgrades to "Strong Buy" ratings and others downgrading to "Hold." Certain discounted cash flow models suggest the stock trades below its intrinsic value, while alternative valuation methods indicate it may be overvalued.

A Landmark $9 Billion Offshore Gas Venture

On March 24, Equinor commenced drilling operations for the Raia gas project, located in the Campos Basin approximately 200 kilometers off the Brazilian coast. With total investment estimated at $9 billion, this initiative represents the largest single international commitment in the firm's history.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Equinor?

The development plan centers on a floating production, storage, and offloading unit (FPSO). Gas will be transported via pipeline to an onshore terminal in Rio de Janeiro state. Scheduled for startup in 2028, the Raia field is projected to meet up to 15% of Brazil's domestic natural gas demand. A notable feature is its environmental profile; the project's planned emissions intensity of around 6 kg of CO? per barrel is well below the industry average of 17 kg. Equinor operates the project with a 35% stake, while partners Repsol Sinopec Brasil and Petrobras hold 35% and 30%, respectively.

Expanding the Renewable Footprint with Wind Power

Just one day earlier, on March 23, Equinor's subsidiary Rio Energy acquired the fully developed Esquina do Vento wind complex from turbine manufacturer Vestas. The 230-megawatt project, located in Rio Grande do Norte state, comprises 51 turbines. Construction is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with commercial operations expected in 2028. The company forecasts the venture will achieve double-digit project returns and generate roughly one terawatt-hour of electricity annually.

A Dual-Strategy for Growth

By advancing both fossil fuel and renewable energy projects simultaneously in Brazil, Equinor is executing a strategy that bridges traditional and new energy sectors. The successful on-schedule launch of the Raia gas production in 2028 will be a critical determinant in realizing the expected value of the $9 billion undertaking.
