Enel Launches Major Grid Modernization Initiative in Italy

Enel starts a major Tuscan grid upgrade in 2026, using EU funds to install 30km of new power lines, boosting capacity and aligning with Italy's national recovery plan.

Italian energy giant Enel is significantly ramping up capital expenditure on domestic infrastructure. A key modernization program for the electricity grid in Tuscany is scheduled to commence in the week starting April 7, 2026. The initiative, which utilizes European Union funding, aims to advance the digital transformation of the company's assets to ensure long-term supply security for the region.

Strategic Infrastructure Investment

This move underscores a broader European trend toward bolstering grid resilience. The increasing integration of diverse energy sources demands more robust and capable distribution networks. While some regional competitors, such as A2A, have recently drawn attention with leadership changes, Enel's strategy remains firmly centered on physical infrastructure expansion.

The project will be executed by Enel's subsidiary, E-Distribuzione. It focuses specifically on the provinces of Prato and Pistoia. Plans involve the installation of approximately 30 kilometers of new underground medium-voltage power lines. Within the municipality of Carmignano alone, five new lines are slated for construction, a development expected to substantially boost the local grid's capacity and reliability.

Aligned with National Recovery Goals

These efforts are directly tied to Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). State funds from this program are being channeled into modernizing and improving the efficiency of public utility services. For Enel, this translates into a structured enhancement of network stability in vital economic areas, supported by external financing.

The incorporation of PNRR-funded projects into the operational timeline highlights the company's objective of permanently securing delivery standards for both residential and business customers. The Tuscan undertaking represents another phase in the ongoing upgrade of Italy's entire distribution network. Through these investments, Enel is preparing its infrastructure to meet the growing demands anticipated in the coming years.
