Shares in German energy giant E.ON have been a standout performer, gaining 19.03% since the start of the year. This surge comes against a backdrop of broader market weakness in the first quarter and reflects a growing investor thesis: the explosive growth of generative artificial intelligence is straining power grids, fundamentally reshaping the value of critical energy infrastructure.

The stock's momentum is notable, trading at EUR 19.58. This places it a comfortable 17.69% above its 200-day moving average and just 3.5% shy of its 52-week high of EUR 20.30. Over the past twelve months, the equity has advanced approximately 35%. This strong run-up is central to the latest analysis from Morningstar, which upgraded the stock to "Neutral" on Wednesday. The research firm argues that E.ON's ambitious growth targets are now largely reflected in the current share price, suggesting limited near-term upside for new investors.

Operational trends continue to provide a solid foundation. Consumer demand for energy transition technologies remains robust, with sales of solar systems recently doubling and sustained high interest in heat pumps and charging infrastructure. As one of Europe's largest distribution network operators, E.ON is structurally positioned to benefit from the energy transition.

Management's long-term vision is encapsulated in an expanded investment framework of EUR 48 billion for the years 2026 to 2030, with EUR 40 billion earmarked for grid expansion and digitalization. The goal is to grow adjusted EBITDA to around EUR 13 billion by 2030, building on a solid EUR 9.8 billion result posted for 2025. However, the path is not without its bumps. For the current fiscal year 2026, the company forecasts a slight dip in adjusted EBITDA to a range of EUR 9.4 to 9.6 billion, citing methodological adjustments in accounting for regulatory effects.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying E.ON?

The paramount uncertainty, however, remains the regulatory framework for network charges. The extent to which the massive planned investment program translates into higher earnings depends heavily on the leeway granted by authorities. A final decision on gas regulation, expected in November 2026, will be a major strategic milestone that sets the financial course for the coming years.

Investor attention now turns to more immediate events. The company's virtual Annual General Meeting is scheduled for April 23, with the deadline for shareholder countermotions passing this Wednesday at midnight. The absence of published objections points to a smooth proceeding. Shareholders are set to vote on a dividend of EUR 0.57 per share, which would mark the tenth consecutive annual increase.

Governance is also in focus, with a refresh of the supervisory board. Helene von Roeder, CFO of Merck, and Dominik von Achten, CEO of Heidelberg Materials, are nominated to replace Anke Groth and Klaus Fröhlich. These appointments signal a reinforced focus on financial discipline and industrial expertise to oversee the company's expansive strategy.

E.ON at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next fundamental catalyst arrives on May 13 with the release of first-quarter results. Until the regulatory landscape becomes clearer, analysts like those at Morningstar indicate they are likely to maintain a watchful, neutral stance on E.ON's equity.
