DroneShield Stock Gains Momentum from European Expansion

Shares of Australian defense technology firm DroneShield saw a significant uptick on March 13, 2026, climbing approximately 6.4% to rank among the top performers on the ASX. This market reaction followed the company's strategic announcement to establish its own manufacturing facility within the European Union, positioning it as a key beneficiary of the continent's current defense modernization cycle.

Record Financials Underpin Strategic Move

The decision to build a European production base comes at a time of unprecedented operational strength for DroneShield. For the 2025 fiscal year, the company reported a staggering 276% surge in revenue, reaching AUD 216.55 million. Notably, this period marked DroneShield's first profitable year, with a net profit after tax of AUD 3.52 million, a sharp reversal from a loss in the prior year.

This financial momentum is supported by a substantial order pipeline. As of February 2026, the company's backlog stands at roughly AUD 2.3 billion across some 50 countries. European and UK contracts account for AUD 1.2 billion of this total. The pipeline includes 18 individual projects, each valued at over AUD 30 million. For the ongoing 2026 fiscal year, AUD 104 million in revenue is already firmly booked.

Shortly after releasing its annual results, DroneShield secured a contract package worth AUD 21.7 million with a Western military reseller. This package consists of six individual contracts for counter-drone systems, spare parts, and software. For context, the same reseller had signed a total of 39 contracts worth AUD 17.8 million over the preceding seven years.

European Factory: A Direct Path to Key Markets

The new EU manufacturing site is explicitly tailored to align with the "ReArm Europe / Readiness 2030" defense initiative. This is a calculated strategic move. European procurement rules often favor local manufacturers, meaning an EU facility directly opens access to German and Austrian government contracts that were previously more challenging to secure due to logistical and regulatory hurdles.

The expansion plan is aggressive. DroneShield aims to quintuple its annual production capacity from AUD 500 million to AUD 2.4 billion by the end of 2026. Alongside the EU plant, additional facilities are planned in Australia and the United States. To support this growth, the company's workforce is projected to expand from 250 to over 450 employees.

Favorable Market Trends and Future Execution

The global counter-drone technology sector is experiencing robust growth, with industry forecasts predicting an annual expansion rate of around 26%. The market is expected to reach a value of USD 2.73 billion in 2026, driven by rising defense budgets across Europe and the increasing tactical use of drones in conflict zones.

Concurrently, DroneShield is working to create a more stable business model. Beyond traditional hardware sales, the company is increasingly integrating Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) components into existing contracts. This shift is designed to build a more predictable stream of recurring revenue.

The critical challenge now lies in execution. The company's ability to deliver on its ambitious capacity expansion within the stated timeframe, and to convert its substantial pipeline into booked revenue at the projected pace, will be the primary driver of its share price performance in coming quarters. With the catalytic European production site and a record order backlog, however, the foundation for success appears stronger than ever.
