The Australian counter-drone specialist is firing on multiple cylinders. A fresh software update for its core detection systems landed on May 4, while a leadership overhaul that began in April is now taking full shape with the arrival of a new chairman. The moves come as the company sits on a record cash pile and a sales pipeline worth A$2.2 billion.

AI-Driven Detection Gets a Boost

The Q2 2026 software package focuses on upgrades to the artificial intelligence systems that identify and classify unmanned aerial vehicles in contested environments. The DroneSentry-X Mk2 and other handheld devices gain improved interoperability, while a revamped ATAK-CIV plugin now feeds counter-UAS data directly into tactical maps used by military and law enforcement agencies. Command-and-control platforms have also been reworked to fuse data from multiple sensors more efficiently — a critical feature for modern layered defence systems.

A Cash-Rich Platform for Expansion

The technology update arrives on the back of a record first quarter. DroneShield posted revenue of A$74.1 million for the three months ended March 2026, more than double the prior-year period. The SaaS component reached nearly seven percent of total revenue, underscoring the company’s push toward recurring income. At quarter-end, the balance sheet showed over A$220 million in cash with zero debt.

New CEO Angus Bean, who took the helm in early April, has set a target of 30 percent recurring revenue by 2030. The transition from founder Oleg Vornik to Bean is part of a broader leadership shake-up that now includes a new chairman. Hamish McLennan, who brings experience from REA Group, joined the board on May 1 and will assume the chairmanship at the annual general meeting on May 29, replacing Peter James. McLennan received a share package worth approximately A$200,000, with a lock-up period preventing any sale until May 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

Europe Becomes a Production Hub

To meet growing demand, DroneShield is establishing its first manufacturing line outside Australia. A partnership with an established contract manufacturer will handle full assembly of counter-drone systems in Europe, with initial deliveries expected by mid-2026. The move shortens supply chains for European customers and positions the company to capitalise on rising defence spending across the continent.

The sales pipeline now includes projects valued at A$2.2 billion, with several ongoing deals each exceeding A$30 million. Starting in 2026, the company will only publicly disclose individual orders above A$20 million — a sign that smaller contract volumes have increased significantly.

Valuation Debate Intensifies

The stock closed at €2.26 on the day of the software announcement, having gained 223 percent over the past twelve months. That rally has pushed the valuation to roughly 45 times sales, or about A$3.5 billion. Analysts are split on whether the price is justified.

DroneShield at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Bell Potter maintains a buy rating with a price target of A$4.80. Jefferies, however, rates the stock a hold with a target of A$3.70, arguing that future earnings remain difficult to forecast. How quickly DroneShield can scale production capacity will likely determine whether the current valuation holds over the medium term.

Shareholders will have their first chance to question the new leadership duo at the AGM in Sydney on May 29. The pressure is on to demonstrate that the ambitious production targets can be met — and that the lofty share price has a solid foundation beneath it.
