The engine maker's stock clawed back some ground last week, closing at €9.21 on Friday — a 2.16% daily gain that capped a weekly advance of nearly 5%. Yet the recovery remains fragile: the shares still trade below all major moving averages, and the distance to the 200-day line at €9.55 has narrowed to less than 4%. A clean break above that threshold would open the path toward the psychologically important €10 mark, but failure risks a retest of the year's low at €7.35.

The recent uptick rests on tangible operational improvement. Deutz generated first-quarter revenue of €530 million while boosting its adjusted operating margin to 7.0%. Management has stood by its full-year guidance, targeting revenue between €2.3 billion and €2.5 billion and a peak margin of 8.0%. Analysts expect a sharp earnings leap of roughly 155% this year.

The company has also strengthened its market standing with a promotion to the MDAX at the start of 2026. Year-to-date, the stock has risen about 7%, and over the past twelve months it has delivered a total return of more than 21%. That longer-term outperformance stands in contrast to the 26% drawdown from the February high, a reminder of the stock's above-average volatility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz AG?

Investors are now eyeing two near-term catalysts. Later this week, Deutz will host a presentation in Cologne detailing its digitalisation strategy for engine manufacturing — an effort aimed at streamlining processes and generating new revenue streams. That will be followed by the half-year report in August, when the spotlight will fall on growth in the Energy and Defense business units, as well as the high-margin service segment.

From a valuation perspective, however, caution is warranted. Independent models flag the company's historical earnings stream as highly erratic, making projections unreliable. The shares also remain below the 200-day line, a level that often acts as a trend filter. Should the current rally stall, the stock is likely to swing within the established range between €7.35 and the recent highs, waiting for the next fundamental data point to provide direction.
