The German telecoms giant is juggling an ambitious expansion into space-based connectivity, a high-stakes World Cup broadcasting play, and simmering labour unrest at home — all while its stock languishes nearly a fifth below its 52-week peak.

Deutsche Telekom has become the first network operator in Germany to offer a fully managed satellite broadband service for businesses, partnering with SpaceX’s Starlink in a deal that runs through 2028. The product, branded “Satellite Internet Access by Starlink,” targets large corporations and public-sector clients in locations poorly served by fibre or mobile networks. Telekom handles everything from planning and installation to ongoing antenna maintenance, billing through existing systems with a single point of contact. The panel satellite antennas deliver up to 400 Mbit/s download speeds and 40 Mbit/s upload, with monthly data packages ranging from 50 GB to 10 TB. Critically, the connection operates independently of terrestrial infrastructure, automatically switching in if the primary line fails.

The Starlink partnership extends well beyond this product. Telekom and SpaceX plan to launch a satellite-based mobile service across ten European countries from 2028, marking the continent’s first such partnership using Starlink’s second-generation satellites.

On the consumer front, Telekom is pushing its MagentaTV brand into the hospitality sector. The company holds exclusive German rights to all 104 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with 44 games available only on MagentaTV. A new cooperation with Sky allows restaurants, hotels, and event organisers to book a “Sky Gastro-Pass,” receiving MagentaTV’s World Cup channels through existing Sky receivers without additional hardware costs. The move aims to build brand awareness for MagentaTV in commercial settings.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Meanwhile, T-Systems, Telekom’s enterprise division, is deepening its industrial footprint. The unit is integrating roughly 70 Ford suppliers worldwide into the Catena-X data ecosystem, a standardised network for supply chain data exchange — including tracking the carbon footprint of individual products. As a founding member of the Catena-X Automotive Network, T-Systems is strengthening its position as a provider of sovereign data spaces.

US earnings shine, but the stock remains under pressure

The group’s most valuable asset continues to deliver. T-Mobile US beat first-quarter earnings expectations by more than ten percent, posting earnings per share of $2.27. Telekom holds just over half of T-Mobile US, a stake valued at roughly €90 billion, meaning the US outperformance feeds directly into group results.

Yet the share price has barely responded. At €27.79, the stock sits around 19 percent below its 52-week high of €34.25, having lost more than ten percent over the past 30 days. The relative strength index stands at 72.7, signalling an overbought condition — a warning given the recent recovery from the year’s low of €26.45.

Labour conflict casts a shadow

A domestic wage dispute is weighing on sentiment. Ver.di, representing around 60,000 Telekom employees, is demanding a 6.6 percent pay rise. Management has yet to make an offer. Service disruptions in customer support have already begun, and the union is using Telekom’s planned €2 billion share buyback programme for 2026 as leverage in negotiations. A crucial round of talks is scheduled for May.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The buyback is already underway. Since January, Telekom has repurchased more than 21.3 million of its own shares, including around 5.8 million in April alone.

Quarterly results on deck

All eyes are now on the first-quarter results, due on 13 May. Analysts will focus on the domestic business and T-Mobile US’s contribution. Management is targeting an adjusted operating profit of around €47 billion for the full year — the Q1 numbers will reveal whether the group is on track. With the stock technically overbought and labour tensions unresolved, the upcoming report represents the first real test of the recovery’s staying power.
