Deutsche Telekom's Satellite Ambitions Face Earthly Realities

Deutsche Telekom shares are navigating a complex landscape where ambitious technological partnerships clash with immediate financial pressures. The stock, trading at EUR 29.59, finds itself at a critical technical juncture, having lost 8.3% over the past month and nearly 14% from its 52-week high of EUR 34.25.

A major strategic move is now taking shape. The company is launching a new service called "Satellite Internet Access by Starlink" (SIA), becoming the sole German network operator to offer fully managed satellite broadband. Targeted at corporate clients and the public sector, the service provides stationary backup for locations without terrestrial connections, like construction sites, with download speeds up to 400 Mbit/s. Monthly costs begin at EUR 16 per terminal, with data packages starting around EUR 55 for 50 GB. A more ambitious Direct-to-Cell service for over 140 million mobile customers across Europe is planned, though its commercial launch is not slated until 2028.

This space-age initiative is unfolding against a backdrop of significant terrestrial challenges. Internally, a costly labor dispute is escalating. The ver.di union is demanding a 6.6% pay rise, an annual member bonus of EUR 660, and an additional EUR 120 per month for apprentices for a twelve-month period. A second round of negotiations is scheduled for April 27 in Siegburg, following an inconclusive first round.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

The timing of these wage talks is particularly sensitive for management. Deutsche Telekom is targeting an adjusted EBITDA AL of approximately EUR 47.4 billion for the full year 2026. Substantial wage increases could directly pressure the company's ambitious margin targets. The financial strain is compounded by currency headwinds; a weak US dollar alone cost the group roughly EUR 600 million in the fourth quarter of 2025.

All eyes are now turning to the group's key profit engine for direction. On April 28, T-Mobile US will report its first-quarter 2026 results. Deutsche Telekom holds a controlling stake of just over 53% in the US subsidiary, which traditionally contributes the lion's share of group earnings. The report comes amid investor anxiety over renewed price competition in the US mobile market, sparked by aggressive moves from rival AT&T. Whether T-Mobile's performance supports or undermines the group's full-year targets for an adjusted EBITDA AL of EUR 47.4 billion and a Free Cash Flow AL of around EUR 19.8 billion will be pivotal for the stock's near-term trajectory.

Technically, the share price is sending clear signals. With a Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 29.1, the stock is in technically oversold territory. It currently hovers near its 200-day moving average of EUR 29.55, with a gap of over 7% to its 50-day line. A share buyback program running until the end of June provides some counterweight to the selling pressure. Valued at a forward P/E of 15.6 for 2026 and offering a dividend yield of approximately 3.6%, the stock is considered fairly valued. The question for investors is whether the upcoming catalysts provide the necessary spark for a recovery.
