Deutsche Telekom's Fiber and Labor Forks in the Road

Deutsche Telekom shares fall 13%, hitting oversold levels amid wage talks and US business concerns, despite aggressive fiber investment and a €2B buyback plan.

Deutsche Telekom shares, trading at €28.55, find themselves in a paradoxical squeeze. While the company aggressively expands its fiber network and buys back its own stock, the equity is under significant pressure, having shed over 13% in the past month. This decline has pushed the stock below key technical levels, including its 200-day moving average of €29.56, and into oversold territory with a Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 24.

A major near-term uncertainty stems from ongoing wage negotiations. Since April 13, the company has been in talks with the ver.di union, which is demanding a 6.6% pay rise for approximately 60,000 employees, alongside a one-time €660 bonus. With four negotiation rounds scheduled through the end of May, the outcome poses a direct threat to the group's ambitious 2026 target of €47.4 billion in adjusted EBITDA AL, up from €44.2 billion the previous year. Rising labor costs could squeeze the very margins management is trying to expand.

Simultaneously, the company is executing a massive infrastructure push. In Northwest Germany, its joint venture with EWE, "Glasfaser Nordwest," has secured regulatory approval for a landmark deal. Starting in autumn 2026, rival Vodafone will utilize this network. The JV itself is ramping up investment, planning to funnel roughly €2 billion into the region by 2029 to create up to 1.8 million new connections. Beyond this partnership, Deutsche Telekom is advancing numerous independent projects, from laying 26 kilometers of cable for 2,900 households in Haslach im Kinzigtal to expanding coverage in cities like Halle and Neubrandenburg.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

This operational drive is backed by substantial shareholder returns. The company is actively repurchasing shares, having bought about 1.32 million of its own shares between April 2 and 10 at an average price of €30.94, a total outlay of nearly €41 million. A second tranche of its buyback program, worth up to €550 million, runs until the end of June, with full-year repurchases planned to reach €2 billion. Furthermore, analysts anticipate a dividend increase for the past fiscal year, from €0.90 to €1.00 per share.

Yet, these supportive measures are being overshadowed by concerns over the US business, which contributes more than half of group revenue. JPMorgan recently trimmed its price target from €41.50 to €40.00, maintaining an Overweight rating but expressing skepticism that the recent share price recovery to around €34 was justified. The bank suggests a level near €31 is more reasonable, citing potential headwinds. All eyes are now on T-Mobile US's quarterly report due April 28, which will provide the first concrete signals for 2026.

The coming weeks are packed with pivotal events. Following the US results, Deutsche Telekom will present its own Q1 2026 figures on May 13. The market will scrutinize whether recent price adjustments for fixed-line legacy tariffs are having the desired effect. Analyst opinions remain divided; while JPMorgan shows caution, Deutsche Bank analysts reaffirm a Buy rating with a €42 price target, viewing US operational trends as the primary potential brake on performance. For now, the stock's trajectory hinges on resolving the dual pressures of domestic cost negotiations and transatlantic earnings momentum.
