Deutsche Telekom's Accelerated Buyback Meets a Critical Chart Barrier Ahead of Earnings
Published on 07/21/2026 at 05:13 | Redaktion boerse-global.deA steady cadence of share repurchases and a technical recovery that has pushed Deutsche Telekom within striking distance of its 50-day moving average are converging ahead of the group's second-quarter earnings release. The combination is giving traders a rare point of focus in an otherwise directionless month for the stock.
Since launching the third tranche of its 2026 buyback programme on 1 July, the Bonn-based telecoms operator has acquired 3.67 million of its own shares on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, including 1.35 million last week alone. That tranche is capped at €560 million and is scheduled to run until 30 September. For the full year, Deutsche Telekom has earmarked up to €2 billion for repurchases, a strategy that steadily reduces the share count and lifts earnings per share.
The buying has provided a supportive undertow for the equity, which has been clawing its way back from a June trough. On Monday the stock closed at €27.17, up 0.59% on the day and 2.14% higher on a weekly basis. Earlier in the session it briefly touched €27.50 before hitting the upper Bollinger Band and retreating — a move that underscores the importance of the nearby resistance.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Chartists are now zeroing in on the 50-day moving average at €27.29, a level the stock has been flirting with but has yet to hold above sustainably. An established breakout would open the path to further hurdles at €27.88, €28.21 and eventually the round €30 mark, while the 200-day average at €28.70 — roughly 5.5% above the current price — remains the longer-term reference. Downside support is well-defined around €25.70–26.00, with a more solid floor near the recent low in the €23.13–23.47 zone. The relative strength index at 57.1 sits firmly in neutral territory, leaving room for further gains without signalling overbought conditions.
Away from the price action, Deutsche Telekom is making tangible progress on its network expansion. Together with housing cooperative Baugenossenschaft Wiederaufbau eG, it has completed connections to 9,000 apartments in Braunschweig, Wolfenbüttel and Salzgitter, bringing fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) directly into each unit. The project, which began in the first quarter of 2024, is now fully operational.
The broader narrative for the stock, however, hinges on the upcoming quarterly figures due 6 August. Analysts continue to view T?Mobile US as the group's primary growth engine, and the buyback momentum will need to be backed by solid operational performance to justify the current valuation. For now, the share price remains caught between the technical tug-of-war at the 50-day line and the fundamental anchor of the next earnings report. Which side gives way will determine whether Deutsche Telekom's summer recovery has more room to run.
