Deutsche Telekom Rides French Telecom Consolidation Wave but Rate Jitters Keep Shares Anchored Near €28

French mobile consolidation with SFR acquisition by Bouygues, Orange, and Free benefits Deutsche Telekom indirectly; stock falls amid macro headwinds but shows strong cash generation and buybacks.

The €20.35 billion acquisition of SFR by a consortium led by Bouygues Telecom, Orange and Iliad’s Free is reshaping the French mobile landscape and sending a powerful signal across the European telecom sector. With the market shrinking to just three network operators, analysts see a clear path to improved pricing discipline and fatter margins. Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s largest telecom operator, stands to benefit indirectly from this consolidation signal, even as its own share price struggles to gain traction.

The deal, expected to close by the end of 2027, sees Orange taking roughly a fifth of SFR’s revenue. For the broader industry, fewer players typically translate into less aggressive price competition. That bodes well for Deutsche Telekom’s long-term profitability, but the immediate market reaction has been muted — the stock ended Friday at €27.73, down nearly 4% on the week and roughly 19% below its 2026 peak.

That disconnect between a bullish structural narrative and a bearish chart is partly explained by macro headwinds. A stronger-than-expected US jobs report has rekindled fears that interest rates will stay higher for longer. For a capital-intensive sector like telecoms, elevated borrowing costs act as a persistent drag on valuations, particularly given Deutsche Telekom’s substantial debt load.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Yet the company’s underlying story is one of strong cash generation and growing cost certainty. Management has committed to returning around €6.8 billion to shareholders this year, split between a €1 per share dividend and a buyback programme that has already snapped up over 12 million of its own shares since early April, the bulk of which are set to be cancelled. On the cost side, a labour agreement with the ver.di union reached in late May runs through the end of 2028 and covers roughly 60,000 employees, providing multi-year predictability on personnel expenses. UBS promptly reaffirmed its buy recommendation with a €36.60 price target, citing exactly that improved visibility.

But the market is not listening. Over the past twelve months, Deutsche Telekom shares have surrendered more than 18% of their value. The 50-day moving average sits at €29.03, acting as a firm resistance level. The relative strength index now reads 38.6, edging into oversold territory — a zone that in the past has sometimes preceded a bounce. Chart watchers also point to a “hammer” candlestick formation on Friday, often interpreted as a potential reversal signal.

Operationally, the group is pressing ahead with its network overhaul. The switch-off of legacy 2G infrastructure is scheduled for 2028, freeing up spectrum for faster services. Customers still relying on older devices are being urged to upgrade. Separately, Germany missed the weekend deadline to implement the EU’s pay-transparency directive, meaning courts will now have to interpret national law in line with European rules, imposing stricter reporting obligations on large companies like Deutsche Telekom.

Near-term catalysts are on the horizon. On June 19, the ver.di tariff commission will hold a final vote on the new contract after consulting its members. Then on August 6, the company releases its second-quarter results, offering the next hard look at operational momentum. Until then, the ball is in the charts’ court: the €27 level is the support to watch. A clean break below it would open the door to further selling, while a successful defence could give the bulls the excuse they need to step in.
