Deutsche Telekom Piles on Cloud and Security Wins While Workers Prepare to Vote on Pay Deal

Deutsche Telekom secures VW cloud contract and joins drone defense project, while aggressive share buybacks and a key wage vote offer near-term catalysts.

Deutsche Telekom is expanding far beyond its traditional telecom roots in a single week, landing a flagship cloud contract with Volkswagen and joining a state-backed project to build a nationwide drone defense network. The twin deals, alongside a heavy share buyback programme, give the Bonn-based group a buffer of good news as it awaits a key tariff vote by domestic employees that could add predictability to its cost base.

T-Systems, the company’s IT services arm, has been chosen by Volkswagen to deploy its "T Cloud Private" as the central infrastructure for applications across the carmaker’s sprawling operations. The win is more than a single contract: it signals that large German industrial groups are turning to sovereign cloud providers for sensitive workloads, and that T-Systems has emerged as a credible partner in that shift. The division has been pivoting toward high-margin cloud and security services for some time, and the VW mandate is the clearest proof yet that the strategy is bearing fruit.

On the security front, Deutsche Telekom is teaming up with the German air traffic control authority DFS and defence electronics specialist Hensoldt to create an AI-driven drone detection network. The plan is to use the company’s existing mobile phone masts as data collection points to identify and track unauthorised drones. The project is still in the planning phase, but it positions Telekom in a fast-growing segment of national security infrastructure. Legal clarity for such initiatives was reinforced on June 11, 2026, when the Bundestag passed the new AI Implementation Act, tasking the Federal Network Agency with central oversight.

Separately, the group is pushing ahead with its fibre broadband rollout in municipalities such as Leipzig and Miltenberg, steadily building the physical network that underpins both its consumer and enterprise offerings.

On the financial side, the company has been aggressively buying back its own shares. In the first week of June alone, it repurchased roughly 1.58 million shares for more than €45 million, bringing the cumulative June spend to over €72 million by June 10. Since the start of the current tranche in April, Deutsche Telekom has bought back a total of more than 13.6 million shares. For the full year 2026, the company has set aside up to €2 billion for buybacks, with the current tranche running through the end of this month.

The market has taken note, though the share price remains well below its peak. Deutsche Telekom’s stock closed Friday at €28.33, up 0.68% on the day and roughly 9% above the 52-week low hit in late October. Yet it still sits nearly 18% below the February high of €34.35. The weekly performance was a gain of 2.16%.

A near-term catalyst could come from within the company’s own workforce. Deutsche Telekom’s domestic employees are voting on a new collective wage agreement, with the ballot set to close on June 19. A positive outcome would bring greater certainty over personnel costs — a meaningful factor for an operator with tens of thousands of staff in Germany.
