Investors in Deutsche Telekom are bracing for a pivotal first-quarter report on May 13, 2026, as the telecom giant contends with a trio of simultaneous pressures: a strategic price increase, a sudden leadership gap, and looming labor negotiations. These factors converge just as the company is in the midst of a multi-billion euro share buyback program, setting the stage for a critical assessment of its cost management and growth trajectory.

The company’s recent share repurchase activity underscores its commitment to shareholder returns. Between April 2 and 10, Deutsche Telekom acquired approximately 1.3 million of its own shares. This move is part of a second tranche, valued at up to €550 million, which is scheduled for completion by the end of June. It forms a segment of a broader €2 billion repurchase initiative set to run through 2026.

Simultaneously, a significant price adjustment took effect on April 1, directly impacting the company's cost base and customer strategy. Customers with older "MagentaZuhause" and "Call & Surf" contracts signed before April 2023 now pay at least €2 more per month. For instance, the MagentaZuhause L plan increased from €44.95 to €46.95. The hike is more pronounced for customers with multiple add-ons, with some facing up to €14 in additional monthly charges. The company cites rising operational and service costs, previously absorbed internally, as the reason, though service levels remain unchanged. Notably, the increase excludes customers on newer fiber-optic plans, creating a clear incentive to migrate to the more efficient, strategically prioritized fiber network, which currently reaches 12.6 million households.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

This operational shift occurs against an unexpected leadership challenge. Abdurazak Mudesir, the board member responsible for Product and Technology since October 2025, departed on March 31 to pursue an opportunity abroad. The supervisory board approved his early release. CFO Christian Illek has assumed oversight of the technology portfolio on an interim basis, leaving a key strategic department without permanent leadership during a crucial phase of fiber and 5G expansion.

Further complicating the cost outlook, wage negotiations with the ver.di union commenced on April 13. The union is pushing for a 6.6% pay rise and an annual €660 bonus for around 60,000 employees across 20 affiliated companies. With several negotiation rounds scheduled through May, the outcome poses a material risk to margins, particularly for field crews and customer service staff essential to the network rollout.

The upcoming quarterly figures will be scrutinized for early signs of how these dynamics are playing out. Management's full-year 2026 targets include adjusted EBITDA AL of around €47.4 billion and free cash flow of approximately €19.8 billion. With the stock trading near €31, slightly below its 50-day average of €31.89, the May 13 report will test investor confidence in the company's ability to manage rising costs and execute its strategic agenda amidst internal transition.
