Deutsche Telekom’s stock ended Wednesday at EUR 26.48, slipping 0.49% on the day, yet the shares posted a gain over the past week ranging from 3.68% to 4.71% depending on the measurement period. The mixed short-term performance masks a flurry of activity across the group, from physical network expansion in southern Germany to cutting-edge cloud and quantum projects for Europe — all underpinned by a steady share buyback.

In the small town of Kuchen, Baden-Württemberg, the company has broken ground on a fully commercially financed fibre rollout. More than 27 kilometres of cable will be laid and 46 new distribution cabinets built, giving roughly 3,000 households and businesses access to gigabit speeds. Mayor Katja Schaible-Schmidt described fast internet as a decisive locational factor, while Telekom partner manager Sabine Wittlinger noted the group already supplies over 50% of fibre connectivity in the Göppingen district.

Simultaneously, the mobile network gained a new site northeast of Arbing, switching on both 4G and 5G to eliminate dead spots along federal highway B588 and surrounding communities. Company spokesman Markus Jodl pointed to the relentless growth in mobile data usage as the rationale.

On the technology front, Telekom scored two notable wins in quick succession. Over the weekend of 13 July, a German research consortium released the open-source language model “Soofi S”. The 31.6-billion-parameter model was trained entirely on T-Systems’ Industrial AI Cloud in Munich, consuming roughly 253,000 GPU-hours on Nvidia B200 systems. The project, coordinated by the KI Bundesverband, validates the group’s sovereign cloud strategy — proving it can supply compliant compute power for European AI applications.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

A day later, the European Union awarded Telekom the lead role in the quantum project PETRUS2, alongside Austria’s AIT. The initiative aims to build a cross-border, eavesdropping-proof infrastructure for quantum key distribution. Partners include Airbus, Thales and SES, positioning Telekom as more than a plain-vanilla infrastructure provider.

Back on the capital markets, the company pressed ahead with its share repurchase programme, buying back over 2.3 million of its own shares on Xetra between 6 and 10 July. The buyback is designed to lift earnings per share by reducing the share count.

Analysts remain upbeat despite the stock’s recent consolidation. Citigroup raised its price target on 14 July, reaffirming a positive rating. UBS also reiterated its buy recommendation with a target of EUR 36.20, citing stable operational trends.

Technically, the picture is mixed. The relative strength index stands at 50.8, signalling neutral territory, but the 30-day volatility of 31.25% points to continuing nervousness. The share price remains below its 50-day moving average of EUR 27.33, while the 52-week range spans from EUR 23.54 to EUR 34.35. Market capitalisation is EUR 122.6 billion.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Year-to-date, the stock has lost 4.99%, and over the last 30 days it has shed 5.02%. That leaves it roughly 22.9% below its 52-week high and 12.49% above the low.

Two key reporting dates now come into focus. On 23 July, T-Mobile US — which contributes the bulk of group profit — releases its quarterly figures, with particular attention on margin trends. Then on 6 August, Telekom itself publishes half-year results. The progress on fibre, mobile, AI and quantum security will need to show up in the operating numbers to shake the stock out of its current range.
