Deutsche Telekom Insider Buys the Dip as Short Sellers Scramble for Cover
Veröffentlicht: 13.07.2026 um 13:52 Uhr, Redaktion boerse-global.deA board member’s timely share purchase, a steep drop in bearish bets and a multibillion-euro buyback are converging to lift Deutsche Telekom from its recent nadir — but the stock still has ground to make up after a tough first half.
Rodrigo Francisco Diehl, a member of the management board, snapped up 2,000 shares on June 29 at €24.64 each, adding another 1,000 shares the following day at €24.15 via Xetra. The roughly €73,000 total outlay came just as the stock touched its 52-week low of €23.54, a moment that often triggers insider purchases as a vote of confidence. Since that low, the shares have rebounded 13.64%, with the latest trade of €26.75 marking a 2.29% gain on the day and a 4.94% weekly advance.
Alongside Diehl’s personal buys, the short side of the trade has evaporated. Short interest in the OTC-listed stock (OTCMKTS: DTEGY) shrank to just 200,804 shares as of June 30, a 67.5% collapse from 617,318 shares in mid-June. The short-interest ratio now stands at a mere 0.1 days, suggesting bears have largely closed their positions. The shift in sentiment comes after a mixed second-quarter report: earnings per share of $0.62 badly missed the $1.07 consensus, while revenue of $34.97 billion sailed past the $33.14 billion forecast. Full-year 2026 EPS guidance of $2.54 offers a longer-term anchor. On the OTC market, the stock closed at $29.83 on July 10, good for a P/E of 14.27, with analysts split between one buy and two hold ratings — a “Hold” consensus.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
The company’s €2 billion buyback program is providing additional support. Between July 1 and 3, Deutsche Telekom repurchased 908,705 shares on Xetra at an average price of €24.74, spending roughly €22.48 million. That activity falls under the third tranche of the program, which has up to €560 million earmarked for use through the end of September. In the first half overall, the telco bought back shares worth approximately €1.1 billion, including 19.4 million shares for €543 million in the second tranche alone. The retired stock reduces the capital base, boosting per-share earnings and dividends for remaining holders.
On the operational front, Deutsche Telekom is pressing ahead with network expansion and customer retention. In Germany, new fibre-optic projects in Polling and Dippoldiswalde will bring speeds of up to 1,000 Mbit/s to 413 households and businesses. The company also launched “MegaSport,” a streaming bundle for MagentaTV customers that combines WOW Live-Sport, DAZN Unlimited and MagentaSport for €59 per month — a saving of €19.94 versus individual subscriptions. After the first 12 months, the price rises to €85, still below the individual total of €105.93. Separately, Mavenir received the Deutsche Telekom Partner Award 2026 for best network innovation, lauded for its MeeC initiative that can cut 5G core network energy consumption by up to 65% during low-traffic periods.
Despite the recent rally, the Frankfurt-listed shares remain well below key technical levels. The stock has recouped 13.64% from the 52-week low but still sits 22.13% below the February 27 high of €34.35. On a one-month view, the stock is down 5.81%, and the 50-day moving average of €27.38 and the 200-day average of €28.76 both lie ahead as resistance. The relative strength index of 53.3 signals neutral territory, while annualised volatility of 32.40% reflects ongoing nervousness. The next major catalyst will be the quarterly earnings report due on August 6, which will test whether the insider buying, disappearing shorts and hefty buyback can sustain the recovery.
