Deutsche Telekom Flexes Defensive Muscle as AI Expansion and Wage Risks Collide

24.05.2026 - 03:13:50 | boerse-global.de

Despite GDP forecasts slashed to 0.3%, Deutsche Telekom raises 2026 EBITDA guidance to €47.5B, expands AI services, and faces labor strikes as stock hovers near €29.26.

German macro forecasts are crumbling — the DIHK slashed its 2026 GDP projection from 1% to just 0.3%, while the EU Commission halved its growth estimate to 0.6%. Yet Deutsche Telekom continues to march forward, leaning on its defensive characteristics and a steady stream of operational catalysts. The stock closed Friday at €29.26, adding 0.14% on the day, and has gained nearly 6% over the past seven days as investors rotate into telecommunication safety.

Against that shaky backdrop, the group is pushing deeper into AI-driven enterprise services. Its cloud-based observability platform LogicMonitor, deployed in the UK since 2023, is now rolling out across the DACH region, Benelux, and the Nordic countries. The system automatically detects network, cloud, and hybrid infrastructure issues before they disrupt operations. In the British market, teams using the tool prevented 19 major incidents that could have hit production environments. Conrad Riedesel, vice president at Deutsche Telekom Global Business, called predictive resilience “indispensable” as critical services depend more heavily on uninterrupted performance.

The B2B push fits neatly into Telekom’s wider AI offensive — including fully subscribed Nvidia B200 capacity at its Munich data centre. But while international expansion gathers pace, domestic labour tensions are boiling over. Ver.di is demanding a 6.6% pay rise over 12 months and has rejected management’s current offer. More than 32,000 employees have walked out so far, with full-day strikes staged nationwide from 19 to 21 May. The fourth round of wage talks is scheduled for 26–27 May, and the union expects a serious proposal.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Management has not waited for a resolution. The company raised its 2026 EBITDA guidance, now targeting growth of around 6% in constant currency to €47.5 billion. Free cash flow is set to exceed €19.8 billion. These numbers underscore confidence even as the German economy struggles.

Overseas, the US subsidiary T-Mobile US remains a key prop. Its shares gained 0.59% on Friday, with JPMorgan recently reaffirming an “Overweight” rating. The DZ Bank, despite trimming its fair value, kept a “Buy” recommendation. Strong operational performance in America cushions any weakness in Telekom’s home market.

Technically, the stock sits just below its 50- and 100-day moving averages, but marginally above the 200-day line at €29.19. The relative strength index of 69.6 suggests the recent rally from the November low of €26.45 has pushed shares into overbought territory — further upside is possible but may be capped. At €29.26, the stock remains 17% below the 52-week high of €34.25, set only on 22 May. Closing that gap requires not just defensive credentials but a broader market regaining faith in growth.

In a climate of constrained growth, cash flow stability and dividend continuity become powerful arguments for institutional investors. The outcome of next week’s wage round could inject near-term volatility: a deal would remove domestic uncertainty, while a failure risks escalating walkouts. For now, Telekom is offering a rare blend of expansion in AI services and the steady hand of a defensive dividend payer.
