Investors in Deutsche Telekom are bracing for a turbulent period as the company contends with a potent mix of rising labor costs, a key executive departure, and strategic pricing moves. The immediate focus is on Bonn, where wage negotiations set to begin on April 13 threaten to squeeze margins in the group's core German business.

The union ver.di is entering the talks with substantial demands for approximately 60,000 employees covered by collective bargaining agreements. It is seeking a wage increase of 6.6 percent over a twelve-month period, coupled with an annual member bonus of 660 euros. These potential additional expenses pose a significant challenge to the already labor-intensive domestic operations, a concern that was reflected in a slight share price dip to 30.99 euros at the end of last week.

Compounding the operational pressure is a sudden vacancy in the C-suite. Abdurazak Mudesir, the board member responsible for product and technology since October 2025, left the company on March 31, 2026, to pursue a new role abroad. The supervisory board agreed to an early termination of his contract. On an interim basis, Chief Financial Officer Christian Illek will assume oversight of the technology portfolio. The lack of a permanent successor comes at an inopportune time, with critical projects like fiber-optic expansion, 5G rollout, and AI integration demanding clear technical leadership.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Amid these challenges, the company is implementing selective price increases. Since April 1, 2026, existing customers on older DSL tariffs—specifically MagentaZuhause and Call & Surf plans booked before April 2023—are facing higher bills. The monthly increase is at least 2 euros; for example, the MagentaZuhause L plan rises from 44.95 to 46.95 euros. Customers with multiple add-ons like MultiSIM cards could see their monthly costs climb by up to 14 euros. The telecom giant cites rising operational and service costs as the reason, though service levels remain unchanged. Affected customers have a special right of termination within three months of receiving notification. Prices for additional MultiSIM cards in mobile plans are also rising, from 4.95 to 6.95 euros per month, adding 24 euros per year per card.

On a more positive strategic note, Deutsche Telekom's subsidiary T-Systems is deeply involved in a prestigious government project. In partnership with SAP, it is developing the prototype for a "Deutschland-App," providing the cloud infrastructure and critical data storage for the planned citizen portal. Initial tests are already underway in cities including Hamburg and Nuremberg. Success here would position the company favorably for a subsequent nationwide tender, even as the project faces public criticism over procurement practices favoring large incumbents.

Regulatory developments are also providing some tailwinds. The Federal Network Agency has lifted ex-ante regulation for the fiber-optic business in several major cities such as Munich, Cologne, and Wolfsburg. This move acknowledges the advanced state of network rollout and grants Telekom greater commercial freedom in these local markets.

All these threads will converge when the company reports its first-quarter 2026 results on May 13. The figures will serve as a crucial barometer, testing whether the group's full-year guidance for adjusted EBITDA of around 47.4 billion euros and free cash flow of approximately 19.8 billion euros remains achievable. Management will need to demonstrate that these targets can withstand the mounting cost pressures from wage talks, even as the search for a new technology chief continues.
